Long Island: Good Ride Today?

Beautiful and (importantly) almost windless Indian summer day for the dead flattest 55 miles I've ever ridden. About 8 of us, my house to Cedar Creek, to Captree, back west to West End, and home.

Today headed down 107 to Wheatley Road, then via Post Road to Westbury. Checked out construction site at LIRR Westbury.
Then went west on Maple Avenue and Westbury Avenue. Experienced hammering pavement on Second Street in Mineola, went north on Willis. Took I .U. Willets to Pasture Lane (a block east of Roslyn Road), then Locust Lane to Round Hill Road.
From Round Hill took a left on Revere Road, then a Short-cut to Harbor Hill Road. Left on Maple Ct. Spruce Street, Pinewood Road, Beechwood Road , to Town Path in Greenvale.
Tooted my air horn in front of Brickwell, and went home via Glen Cove Road and Glen Cove Avenue.
21.97 miles, but I’m writing down 22 in my log book.
Fairing handled the wind quite well, thank you.

Last summer day this year... had a Kaos Joe sighting on Round Swamp on the ride home.
It was windy so I just did my normal to Oyster Bay ride.
On a side note, I was having a reap brake issue on my CX bike. Turned out the hydraulic master is leaking and there is no rebuild kit for it so it has to be replaced. The bad news is all the suppliers are out of stock and Sram said they won't have more till January. Not taking NO for an answer and having plenty of time to surf the internet I figured i'd find want I need.. Sram Rival HDR right shifter. Dozens of site list them but when you call to find if they actually have it in stock the answer was always no. finally I found a vendor and that had a Sram Force shifter which will work and there was only 1 in stock... so i grabbed it. I will have it Wednesday and will not lose any riding time this winter.

But after talking to staff at 3 different shops it seems that the way it is for both Shimano and Sram.
I also have to buy the entire shifter, hose and caliper.

Much faster ride today, up to Crab Meadow where the restrooms are all locked up for the duration, and the tables and chairs under the brick pavilion are all packed away. Theres another pavilion about 100 yards east with picnic tables so still a place to take a break.

Found a couple of bridges to ride over. With detours both intended and not it was a 52 mile loop. With some modifications to the route we'd like to get the tandem up there but getting a bit of fall camping in is going to take priority. FYI the Henry Hudson Drive was heavily damaged in a few spots by one of the recent storms and is closed to through traffic by auto; the marinas along the river are accessible from either end but there is a barrier in the middle, so car traffic is almost non existent. Bikes can get through just fine so it's a great ride right now. Driving to the start however was miserable, traffic levels are unreal.

Got a night ride in at Glacier Ridge with some guys from CLIMB. They set a good pace and made sure I kept up. Had an 1100 lumen cygolite metro and a niterider 500 lumen, set both on medium setting to avoid batteries running dead so really 550 and 200 lumen, lighting wasn't a problem except on the faster downhill curves so I just ordered a helmet mount and 1100 lumen niterider to go with it. Hopefully they'll show up before this Friday's ride. Will keep the handlebar the same for the next ride but want that extra light up top to make the curves.

Notice the Pedestrians on the boardwalk to the right.

We are now free to cross the Brooklyn Bridge without the throngs of pedestrians (tourists) as seen to the right

Leaving Manhattan

Brooklyn Bridge Protected Bike Lane

Brooklyn Bridge Protected Bike Lane
Rode across Brooklyn Bridge Protected Bike Lane, a new feature. No longer must we dodge pedestrians, and it saves a few feet of elevation gain.
Returned via Manhattan Bridge.

My first "real" MTB ride since my last one in April, the last mile of which I rode with a broken arm. This ride was much more pleasant, same cast of characters, 16 miles, no injuries. I did put a protective talisman on the bike which seems to have worked.

Great day on the Captree bike trail. Very few riders in the 50 degree weather as the chilly weather kicks in.

Gotta Get Me one of those "FALL RISK" Bands.......flopped over onto someones lawn the other day, skinned my elbow but other than embarassment I continued on - I'll be 80 in 2 weeks, the band might help.

Need that fall risk for the mtb. Been mostly getting only light riding in and focusing on writing but better get some miles in, signed up for Rainey Park cross race on the 20th.

Well, if you break your arm and have to have an orthopedic surgeon screw it back together, they will put one on you during the festivities.

Another great day for riding on Ocean Parkway bike trail. Mid 60’s in November, sunny, a few roller blades, walkers, and cyclists but nothing like in August.

My cameo appearance in Queens Blvd Victory, by StreetFilms

The ride was a memorial ride as well as a celebration of the Queens Boulevard Bike Lane

Queens Boulevard Bike Lane goes under the LIRR mainline.

If you go to where Greenpoint Avenue forks off to the left of Queens Boulevard, you can get on this path to the Kosciusko

The memorial ride Sunday 12 November

This is the CSX freight line bridge over the Queens Boulevard Bike Lane

Transportation Alternatives rally members entering Forest Hills

The Queens Boulevard Bike Lane Rally, with Transportation Alternatives

Keep this in mind
There was a Transportation Alternatives rally ride on Queens Boulevard Sunday 12 November. We’re hoping the bike lane can be continued through to Jamaica.

Headed out for another night ride at Glacier Ridge last night, we did a couple of the loops and got to the main stop when one of the riders started not feeling well. He sat down then laid down and complained of being light headed, sweating profusely, after a short bit he mentioned chest tightness so I called 911. Couple of us went down the hill to the nearest street to guide fire rescue, one rider cleared the route for them to come up and the rest stuck with him to keep an eye on him. Ended up being taken out on a gator. Hopefully things turned out well for him, don't know him.
Hit up Rainey Park cross race this morning with my middle kid. I got second to last but had a good time and put in some real effort, clearly haven't been riding enough lately though.

Wow. Ocean Parkway. That brings back many memories from a very long time ago. I grew up just off Ocean Parkway and Avenue P. My first bicycle, a blue Schwinn Stingray, was stolen from a playground on Ocean Parkway as I, age, 6 or 7, watched helplessly from a swing.
