Joe, you've been riding MPBC rides on the north shore for 25 years easily. How did you now discover new roads in Huntington ?. Somebody get lost ?.

Oh, it can be done. Actually, I was shown some of these byways by a friend who lives up in Huntington. If you go north on Huntington Bay Rd. from 25A, there is a network of little traveled lanes. Some of these might be, ahem, private. You can work your way north and west to end up on East Shore Rd. and return to Halesite/Huntington with a very pretty ride along the shore of the harbor. This would put you back in familiar territory.

No ride for me today, but i did use my rainy day off to contact the DOT Region 10 in Hauppage to report the faded bike lanes on the crossover at Southwoods Road and Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. These things were painted only about a year ago and they have already washed away, causing a really dangerous situation at a critical point where bikes have to criss-cross with cars merging to their right into a right turn lane. The DOT rep seemed very responsive. I hope they get on this before next spring.

Wow, what a day. Days like this are why bikes were invented.
A friend and myself saddled up this morning, and headed downwind. It was as much sailing as pedaling. 110 miles later, we ran out of land.

Colder today, and no luxury of an all day downwind sail, so only a 39 miler to Locust Valley. Alas, the melodramatic weather people make it sound like we were all going to get blown off our feet, and dissuaded my Mrs. from coming out. I don't want to hang up that tandem.......

Still enjoying the heck out of this weirdly mild weather.....we did a 46 mile AA ride today, happily still on the tandem. But I'm starting to find the relative warmth a bit creepy.

Finally..... warm weather and i wasn't sick.
Did a quick 20 miles. Just enough to stretch the legs and enjoy the ride.
Reminds me how much i hate spin class.

Ha! I knew SOMEBODY else must be doing something!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but fear last weekend will be the last one for the year where we get to put 90 miles on the tandem.

Got a nice 8 mile mt. bike ride at Bethpage. Have only been in their once since last year so skipped the Brickyard as I didn't feel like getting my butt kicked even more. Tired none-the-less !.
Probably should've done a road ride. It was 36 'ish at 8 but got warm very quickly.

MTB is ready to roll. I wish I was off tonight......the full moon would have made for a nice night outing. Maybe tomorrow night.

Took the MTB out to run some errands. I cut through a parking lot and as I was hanging a left. the wheels slipped out and I went down hard. Landed on my left side. I was a bit stunned but quickly got up realizing I smacked my head. I moved the mike to the side and examined myself only finding some road rash and a cut on my right hand. Then I realized I lost my glasses and went to recover them. Finally i took my new helmet off and found it someone banged up. After a few minutes I got back on the bike to find the handle bars twisted so out came the multi-tool. I have the bike a quick once over and headed home.
It's now about an hour later and my neck and left shoulder are pretty stiff. I have some road rash on my left shoulder and left leg. Minor damage to the bike, just a few scrapes and tweaking the handle bars. My cell phone was in my pocket and the back has a few scrapes. My glasses are unbroken, but needed some straightening. And the helmet has a few small dents.
I'm lucky, it could of been much worse.
Little did I think that MTB tires don't have as much grip on damp blacktop as road tires. D'oh.
After a closer examine the helmet is tweaked. I brought it to Brands and they said not to use it. It's a Giro Synthe MIPS and they have a crash replacement program.

Wow, I am sorry that that happened. Yes, it could have been worse.
This is why I tend to skip it on rainy days, or just bring the bike on the subway to go home if rain starts coming down while I am at work.

Glad to hear it wasn't worse, O'n'S. Yes, wet leaves can really lure you into a trap. As bad as your ride turned out, though, I am still jealous that I never made it out of the garage today.

Hey, does anybody know any history about "the brick yard?" One of the old hometown murder stories I wrote about this past year involves a brickyard right in that area somewhere. I wonder if this is the one.

It was damp blacktop. I was cutting through the DQ parking lot on Sunrise and the turn was in the shade where the early morning dampness didn't dry.
99.9% of my rides are on my road bike with Conti GP4000SII which have much better grip than the MTB with Bontrager LT-2 tires.
Rookie mistake... it won't happen again.
BTW, I landed on my phone which was in my left pocket and my glasses went flying. Could have been well a over $1000 crash if they also needed to be replaced.
Just glad it didn't happen on my carbon bike.

Two occasions force the grammar-lover in me to respond: "could have", not "could of".
Carry on.

Glad to hear you and your steed are (relatively) intact. Amazing how fast one can find oneself on the ground. I myself was laid low at work early Saturday morning during floor de-waxing. We've all walked on wet floors, but whatever is used to strip old wax is another beast entirely. I had less than 2 feet of wet floor to clear, failed spectacularly, slammed the warning cone with my chin, and bled like a pig. My friends in the ER glued my chin together and 2 hours later we were underway on the tandem.
Keep the rubber side down folks.

This section of trails is located, as BTW, on the extreme SE section of the Park next to Rnd. Swamp Rd. on the east and the black golf course on the south, right across the road from the gravel plant. Access is squeezed between the golf course and Barry Lane.
There has been questions over the years as to whether or not the state actually owns the land. I know they completely closed this area during the 2000 US Open, for reasons that escape me.

Hey OldnSlow sorry to hear of your mishap. I got out early and it was surprising how wet the roads were. Just like riding in the rain in some places. Good thing you invested in that helmet, much better to waffle it instead of your head.
Figurin' today might be the last opportunity for a decent ride I headed out before dawn and was shocked by the wet, cold and fog. Employed great care to avoid painted lines, metal grates and sewer caps. Things improved once the sun came up, that is with the exception of the wet roads. Went from the house to Tobay and all over to the tune of 50+ miles. By the time I was done the bike was filthy and covered with dirt and sand. Worse than ridin' in the rain.
Again sorry to hear about your spill O&S. Hope you're feeling well. I'd be interested in seeing how the Giro crash replacement deal works out

Still, to my amazement, getting out on the tandem, and in shorts no less. Roads were dry by 9 and the bike is clean.
At the rest stop in Bayville, on a whim I changed the cranksets to 90 deg out of phase just to see what it felt like. It was fine on the flats but felt weird going uphill, which is exactly when it's supposed to even out the power stroke. The Mrs. did not like it at all, and when the Stoker ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. So about 6 miles later we pulled over and changed it back to in-phase. Habits are hard to break after who-knows how many thousands of miles.

The Good-Did my first dusk into night MTB ride of the season tonight. I rode from Bethpage up the GreenBelt to the Tower Loop and did a lap. Lovely sunset and evening, just cool enough, whiff of woodsmoke in the air......
The Bad- I bent my derailleur hanger YET AGAIN when a pencil sized twig got sucked up into the chain. A friend has an alignment tool he has used once in 20 years. I've had to borrow it 4x at which point I made my own, and used that tonight for the second time at least. It's my curse. Thank God my MTBs are steel.
