Damn, I was all rigged up for a Montauk run, but something came up for the afternoon. So, Old Dock, 54 miles.
I used to bring my pooches here often. Retriever heaven.

Almost got his today....
Heading south on Round Swamp road, as I approached the triangle at the end, I pulled to the center of the lane and signaled that I was going left. I had both a front white and rear red strobe on and there's no traffic control in my direction. Coming from the right fork was a car that had a yield sign and never slowed down forcing me to swerve to avoid getting hit.
From the side road I saw police car that just put its lights on and followed the car. I decided to turn around and caught up to the police car about 100 yards up the road. I asked the cop if he was him blow through the yield sign. The cop said YES and was pulled him over for failure to yield.
That triangle is very dangerous and try to make myself as visible as possible, but many drivers are just too distracted.

I was hit 2 weeks ago on South Oyster Bay Rd. I have come to the conclusion that Nassau County does a horrible job of making the county even remotely bike friendly, They really should considering the complete lack of public transportation. Be careful out there

On a more pleasant note, the annual Tour of the Hamptons is this Sunday. Besides nice roads and great folks, come out and feast on the best peanut butter and jelly sandwiches you can get in a bank parking lot on a Sunday morning, anywhere.

Joe, good seeing you yesterday. I headed northeast and wound up in Smithtown before heading back.
It was a good ride and decided to give my bike some "love" today by thoroughly cleaning it.

Another successful TOH in the books. Gorgeous day, continuing our record of almost 30 years without a rain out. Lots of positive feedback from the participants.
Spent about 3 hours Saturday night getting logistics ready, then up at 430am Sunday to get out to Bridgehampton and set up the tents and tables etc at the food stop. After the afternoon crew relieved us at noon the 7 of us volunteers did our own tour for a couple of hours, combining sections of the 25 and 50 mile routes. A long and tiring day but fun and laughs from start to finish.

We all played hooky today and with 2 riding buddies we did what I’m now calling the “3 Bulls Ride”. It’s a nice area to road ride, likeliest the emptiest area of L.I.
It was 50 at the start with the temp. steadily dropping on my Garmin to 45.1. Never hit higher than 55, but those are pretty nice temps IMO.
Good ride on a beautiful day

In praise of great weather and cargo capacity.
So, my wife's birthday was last week. For some reason she felt the pull of the sea and wanted to celebrate with a dinner with a salt water sunset. Clouds rolled in when we were having an appetizer so that was that. Yesterday, our anniversary and I was damn well going to provide that sunset. She's lucky to make home by 6pm. How to do with our wonderful LI traffic? (Plus I wanted to get a ride in).
So, do one of my usual loops, diverting to her office at the end. Full change of clothes and towel in saddlebag. Clean up in men's room, unbeknownst to her, mere yards from her office. Surprise at 5pm, drive her car straight to lovely dinner. (Plus I got a 45 mile ride in).
Full bag, Oyster Bay NY
Sunset!
And today, 40 mile club ride to St. Rocco's bakery in Glen Cove, came home with a good stash of fantastic almond biscotti. Big saddlebags rule(sometimes).

Brands is having their Fall Sale this weekend.

St Rocco's Bakery experiencing a blip in sales......went there both days this weekend with an especially big group yesterday. On cue, a man with a thick Italian accent (part of the "scene" for sure) came up to us, amused at the idea "you ride all those many miles, burning all those calories, and then you come HERE!!??".
37 miles Saturday and 47 yesterday, I think we burned it off.

Test of the new Garmin Drive 52, awesome. The bikes I ride have 12 volt batteries for the lights, so I took advantage of that fact and bought an automotive GPS. I also have fairings to mount the unit in.

Just time for a short 30 mile ramble around the West Hills.
Sweet hollow Rd looking autumnal
Likes a nose rub. The white one is shy.
Spent many a night camping here, especially in winter, when it was a Boy Scout property. Now West Hills County Park.

Hello everyone.
New to the forum and new to biking. I'm a runner with a minor injury that has had me on the shelf for almost a month. To keep myself fit, I started riding the spin bike at the gym, but then I thought--I always wanted a road bike--now is the time. I bought my bike 4 weeks ago, and have been going out weekend mornings, starting out in the South Huntington area. I had my first 50 mile ride Saturday, and even though it was cold when I first got out at about 7, it warmed up enough to make it a great ride.
Anyway, I'm looking for some folks who start their rides near enough to me that we could meet up and go for a long ride together. If you're interested, let me know.

Hello G, and welcome aboard!
South Huntington is a great place to live for a cyclist. There are lots of great roads right out the door. If you are interested in riding with a group, nearby you have the Huntington Bicycle Club (which I believe meets in Greenlawn?).
Probably not much further away is the Massapequa Park B.C. which despite the name has rides leaving from the Bethpage library parking lot on weekends, and Borella Field a bit north of that on weekdays. The Borella riders are a mix of MPBC and HBC members. Check out the website. Many if not most of our rides go to, or pass through, your area of northwestern Suffolk. The photos I put up in my previous post on this thread were all taken in South Huntington.
I passed through there again yesterday riding from the south shore to Caumsett, and am peeved because I took a few really nice pictures in the golden light of late afternoon, and then accidentally deleted them.
Anyway, hope to see you on the road!

Funny that you rode all the way up to the north shore to go to Caumsett. That was actually the first long ride I took on my bike a few weeks ago. I thought twice about it because of the steep hill you face on the way back when you pass the beach, but it ended up not being as bad as I thought. Last week, I rode out to Nissequogue river state park for the second week in a row, this time taking some more bike-friendly roads.
Hey, if you see someone on a black bike with a bright orange helmet, it's probably me.

Thanks for the information, Joe. I looked up the Huntington Bicycle Club, and it looks like their season is ending in a couple of weeks. I'm definitely joining in the spring.

GG,
I'm surprised to hear HBC "ends" their season. Some of the guys continue year-round, as does MPBC. Many of us, myself included, shift more into mountain biking when the real cold hits. It's much easier to stay warm on the trails than out in the wind on a road bike.
Caumsett and Nissequogue are 2 of my most common destinations when solo, and many club rides go to Nissy, Kings Park, Crab Meadow, Northport, Oyster Bay, Bayville etc. Go backwards on this thread, I and a couple of the other regulars like to take pics on our rides and some of the places might be familiar to you or might appeal as a destination.
Keep an eye out for a dork with a mustache most commonly on a dark green Soma 'cross bike. If you see a couple on either a bright yellow or ruby red tandem, definitely me and the better half.

Has a good run of great weather days but it's coming to an end. Next week is the last of the 60* highs. After that we'll only be in the 50s.
So get out of you can.

Some of last weekends MPBC AA rides were done on foot; 8 of us and 1 MBPC dog hiked the hills of Harriman and Bear Mountain. Great times!
Snuck in a lunch ride to Cold Spring Harbor Monday, and a short 28 miler to the beach this morning. Took the Red Menace instead of the Yellow Submarine.
Hey Glen and Steve, this Luddite just unboxed and is charging a Garmin Edge Explore. Imagine the trouble I'll be able to get into now. Wish me luck.

Lesson 1. Auto Pause. Stops the track record when stopped at a light. Settings - Ride Settings - Auto Features - When Stopped. That’s my choice as when I’m mt. biking my speed can fall below 3mph ‘ish and I don’t want the pause to click in.
