Whiteface Mountain, NY legal or not outside of race
Is it legal to ride up Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks outside of the annual bike race? I thought it used to be closed other than during the race or am I mistaken. I see a website that suggest you can ride up outside the race.

I believe you can, otherwise Bicycling Magazine wouldn't be putting stuff like this in their magazine:

There used (I have not been there for many years) to be a road you could drive part way up. So I don't see an issue riding up it.
I have only hiked and skied it.

I go to Lake Placid once a year or more and it's definitely legal to ride up Whiteface. You can even find the .TCX Garmin files for the bike portion of the Iron Man Lake Placid races on Strava. It includes Whiteface, although as the locals are fond of pointing out, the mountain is actually in neighboring Wilmington, NY and not in Lake Placid.

Are we talking trail or road cycling here?
Last I knew you couldn't ride up the road during "business" hours, which I think was 8-4 or something like that. You could ride before or after.

I don't recall seeing anything about a daytime prohibition. I'm going up to Lake Placid again in just under a month. Not taking the bike this time, as November riding's a bit too cold for my blood there, but I may just drive out to Wilmington and look.
However, I just checked the official Whiteface site and apparently the drive is only open Saturday and Sunday from 9-5:30 now.

Yes you can. Memorial Highway | Whiteface Mountain but soon they'll close for the season. I remember driving up all the way to the mountain from albany on a mid October day just to see the locked up gate.

There is a gated booth at the bottom of the hill and you have to pay to drive up. The road up the mountain is pretty narrow. I tried to ride up about 10 years ago and was told that bicycles were not allowed on the road because it was too dangerous and congested with auto traffic. After talking to a guy at a local bike shop he said just go up before or after gate hours, which I did. That's all I know.

You can definitely ride up - they definitely make you pay the toll though.
