Biking to new england then ferry over to long island, maps if available
hi Everyone,
I would like to ride from Queens NY all the way to Montauk, however I really find no joy heading there and going back on the same route. What I would like to do is ride all the way to New England then take the ferry to get to LI and stay over night then ride from Montauk to Queens or vice versa.
However when I was looking at Ferry routes all I can find is routes from New London Connecticut to Orient Point NY, if this is the case I will need another 68 miles to get to Montauk and would be very close to a double century and may not have enough recovery time to ride back the following day. In addition I would like to get there in a reasonable time so as to look around as well. My question is, is there any ferries that start from New England and will drop you off exactly at Montauk.
Also if you happen to have biking routes via Garmin GPS, would really appreciate it as well.
Thank you in advance.

Montauk to New London, CT., seems to be what you want. It lets out at Montauk Harbor, which is north of the village of Montauk.

No GPS routes, sorry.

Or from Orient ride to Greenport, take the ferry to Shelter Island ride across the island to the Ferry to Sag Harbor, then to Montauk and back. A couple of years ago a friend went from NYC to Bayshore via New England. He overnighted in Haverstraw NY, Rheinbeck NY, Hudson NY, Stockbridge Mass, Somewhere in CT and then took the ferry from Bridgeport to Pt Jefferson and on back to Bayshore.

I think the Bridgeport ferry option to Port Jeff would definitely be your best option, albeit one of a relatively few options.

I've been riding Syosset, LI to points all up and down the Connecticut/Rhode Island shore for several years and I've never heard of a ferry from New London to Montauk. Thanks for that tip on The Viking Ferry, Steve B. You're always opening new doors for me!
That said, I have ridden the entire Connecticut shore from Port Chester, NY to Narragansett, RI, and my opinion is that it's a lot nicer and a lot calmer traffic-wise than riding the length of Long Island. I generally use the Port Jeff or Orient Point Ferries to cross the Sound. If I were you, I'd take dendawg's advice and float New London to Orient Point, ride the bike lane to Greenport, then do the ferry/bike hop across Shelter Island, into Sag Harbor, down Rt. 114 to the Hamptons, and head to Montauk from there. If you time it right, when you're ready to go home, you can take the LIRR (get a bike pass) from Montauk back to wherever you are starting.
Follow-Up: Whoa! I just saw that the fare from New London to Montauk is $80 each way with a bicycle! No thanks...Orient Point is just fine with me.

Curious about the cost difference between a direct ferry to Montauk from New London vs the cost for a passenger and bike from New London to Orient Point and the added costs of the Shelter Island ferries. The extra 30 plus miles bicycling notwithstanding.

Prices are seasonal, but a one-way ticket on the New London/Orient Point Ferry for a passenger with a bike is around $21. A same-day round trip would be about $32. The Shelter Island Ferries (north and south) are about $5-6 round trip each. Figure a total of around $45, round trip.
I'm not sure whose numbers are accurate for the New London to Montauk Ferry, but either way, it's going to cost twice - or three times - as much as the ferry to Orient Point.

The website requires you to pretend you're buyin a ticket. I got as far as this page:

OK, so then it's $57/one way and $85/round trip with a bike? So it's about a forty dollar savings to go to Orient Point. Plus, you get in all that good riding, AND you can spend the forty dollars on lunch in Sag Harbor.

In the past it has been possible to catch a ride from Montauk to Block Island and then from Block Island to Point Judith, RI. From there you can take a ferry to New London, CT. There you can decide to head back via CT or LI. The North Fork is very different than the South Fork. Here are a few resources to look into:
Block Island Express: Connects New London, CT and Old Harbor, Block Island in just over one hour on a high-speed catamaran. The terminal in New London is located next to the train station and limited parking is available with a municipal garage across the street. This ferry runs May through September only. Visit www.goblockisland.com for schedules and more information.
Viking Fast Ferry: Connects Montauk, NY to New Harbor, Block Island in about one hour via high speed ferry. Ferry runs Memorial Day through Labor Day only. For schedule information and directions visit Viking Fleet.
Block Island Ferry: provides year-round service from Point Judith, RI. This is the only Ferry that can take vehicles to the island and reservations for vehicles are required. Passengers do not need reservations. For information please visit Travel to Block Island Quickly & Easily | Block Island Ferry or call(401) 783-4613.
Block Island Hi-Speed Ferry: A state-of-the-art High Speed Catamaran, the high-speed ferry sails mid-May through mid-Oct. The ferry departs from the State Pier in Point Judith, R.I. and docks in Old Harbor in under 30 minutes. Please visit Travel to Block Island Quickly & Easily | Block Island Ferry for schedules and more information or call (401) 783-4613
