It is north of where I grew up in Md but trust me, I grew up in the North. The Southerners are on the other side of the Potomac from DC.

For the purposes of BF (and California), let's draw it at Paso Robles.

If I use Cal-Trans markings it's just north of Fresno. On the 99, in the center median there is a palm and a pine tree planted. The palm is south of the pine and represents So. Cal., the pine represents No. Cal. A line drawn DUE west would put me darn close to Monterey/Carmel.

There is a big mountain range that separates L.A. from the central valley. Anything south of that is surely So Cal. Then you have Central California, where everybody grows stuff. That goes up to near Sacramento. From The Sacramento river north is definately Northern California, And everything from San Luis Obispo north along the coast is coastal Ca. Really at least 4 separate constituencies.

Me, I'm a Coastie born and raised and proud of it.

The Sacramento runs north-south. Do you mean the American?

The Sacramento River runs more or less south to The capitol then sort of west to the SF bay. How about we use Highway 80 as a more definite landmark. For sure, anything north of Hwy 80 would be Northern California.

The region is traditionally described as "eight counties", based on demographics and economic ties: Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. The more extensive 10-county definition, including Kern and San Luis Obispo counties, is also used based on historical political divisions. This is according to wikipedia. I would agree with capnjonny. Anything south of the mountain range separating Bakersfield from the high desert (i.e. the Antelope Valley) is probably the best description of the boundary between the southern portion and the rest of California.

If you fold a map of California horizontally, Santa Cruz/Watsonville is right about at the center North/South divide
