Markleeville fire....
|
Well I guess I have to pick a different route for my weekend ride. Does anyone know how far the smoke goes from the fire? I want to ride in the area and wondering what area might be safe and smoke free.

Smoke has been blowing ENE.... Tahoe has been clear... from what I've looked at, even ebbetts, from the Silver Creek Bridge to the Summit look clear... not that you could get there from Markleeville.... maybe from the Bear Valley side though.... there's always Truckee :)

I use to live up by South Lake Tahoe, CA. Forest fire were always a problem. But Cal-Fire (formally CHF) the USFS Fire Service, and local fire agencies always did their best to get them out fast.
Weather or not some big bicycle riding event was planned or not. Forest Fire damage more then tourism, so quick extinguishing is important. BTW those of you who have been to Alpine County Recently. Is the Cuttroat Saloon still open on the main drag in town? |
Here are a couple of options for you (compliments of my friend DanM) that will give you lots of climbing, however, they are down the hill from the fire.
JenkinsonLake_to_Kyburz - A bike ride in El Dorado County, CA Rockcreek, Mosquito, Apple Hill, Forebay - A bike ride in Placerville, CA JenkinsonLake to Strawberry OutnBack - A bike ride in El Dorado County, CA You can also do an out and back from Truckee down to Cisco Grove and back to Truckee via old Donner Pass Rd, then do the loop from Truckee to Tahoe City to Kings Beach and back to Truckee via SR 267. Hopefully, there won't be any smoke in the Truckee area. |

It looks like Alta Alpine Challenge is being cancelled because of the fire. Hope it doesn't affect the Death Ride
