This is from March of 2008 - that's how long the washout has been washed out.

They fixed it at one point several years ago, but it failed almost immediately. Like the following winter. If it was done by private contractor, I'm surprised there was no warranty period. I could swear it didn't even last a full year.

Today's news Monday 2018-02-04
I might be able to find my way up there on Tuesday afternoon.

A “very cold air mass” will drop snow levels in the Bay Area to about 1,500 feet Monday night into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The highest Bay Area peaks could accumulate between 6 and 9 inches of snow

You really captured springtime on Diablo well, that's some really great photography, especially for what looks like the middle of the day.

I was up there again yesterday afternoon, and it's unfortunately dying out really fast. What looked great last Friday is starting to look tired and lifeless. Don't know if this mini heatwave has anything to do with it, but it was not nearly as nice yesterday.

Also, I don't know about others, but man, my body is NOT ready for ~90 degrees! It's been such a cold winter, even recently we've been having cool mornings, and some cool days, so yesterday was torture on my body. It was not fun on the mountain!

Yeah, Saturday morning I quit at Junction because it was too cold and foggy - Wednesday afternoon it was HOT!

I'm good with hot though. Not as many poppies as last week, but still awful pretty.

Thanks for poppy pics, people. I love poppies - my favorite wild flowers - and have been getting my poppy fixes in the Berkeley Hills. I may have to check on their condition on the Devil Mountain this weekend . . . .

I'm finding that as I get older, I'm less tolerant of the heat. Used to be 95 or so I'd start to feel it, but now it seems I'm less tolerant. Kind of a bummer, considering the mountain is a sauna in mid summer, even at 6PM!

I find the opposite, heat bothers me less as I get older. I got so used to riding in the heat last summer and fall, I was actually mad when it cooled down. Riding in 100 degree temps during the middle of the day had become my new "normal". Takes me a few weeks to adjust to the heat, the first few days are the worst for me.

There was a mention of "heat shock proteins" in another thread, which are generated in plants, animals, and humans as a result of exposure to heat. Interesting topic. I must have been swimming in these last August:

Oh it definitely affects my performance, I've just learned how to deal with it effectively through pacing and fluids and clothing and attitude... and ice in my water bottles... so long as the air quality is OK.

The Devil Mountain did not reward me with a ton of wildflowers this past Sunday (the 28th), but I did see a nice patch of lupine near Rock City and a wonderful hillside of poppies a little bit above Juniper - bad photo evidenceattached.

As usual, I went up the Mountain veeeeeerrrrry slowly. My mantra was operating at full force - I go slow, but I make up for it by stopping a lot. I won't embarrass my self by telling you how long it took me to reach the top, but rest assured that it takes me more minutes than it takes you. Probably by quite a bit. And I walked up The Wall -again, veeerrry slowly. But I got there, and it was a great day to be on Diablo.

April 28 on the Devil Mountain.

Last week (April 21) in Berkeley, a few doors down from my house.

There's this new fence on Summit Road that serves no purpose. There's nowhere for off-road vehicles or MTBs to go by there, there's no evidence that anyone was using this as an access to anything, the fence doesn't effectively stop anybody who wants to get around it, and it's certainly not retaining anything from landslides. It appears to be just art. It's about half a mile above Junction.

So I'm thinking this fence needs a mascot - like a stuffed devil tie-wrapped to one of those posts. Something that would clearly not be vandalism and something that will make people smile.

Ideas? Donations?
