Extensive Ebbetts Pass road work delays opening

Wondering if this will be open for the DeathRide on the 8th July???

Sure looks like a big mess. I have not heard the DR people as to what is going to happen if it's not ready.

Wow, nice article.

I wouldn't do Death Ride without at least the front side of Ebbett's.

The Alta Alpina Challenge was scheduled for this coming Saturday but they canceled it long ago -- I'd planned to ride it with a friend.

Yes, I so enjoy the front side of the Ebbetts Pass. Up and Down.

With 2 weeks to the ride, it is not looking like they are going to be done before.

Unfortunately, the organizers will not be giving a half million $$ back to the rides. they will probably just change the route and keep the money. That is big bucks for the Alpine County.

Let's all hope they can get this done in time.

Years ago (2010?) when there was a lot of snow and Alta Alpina couldn't go all the way to the end of Blue Lakes Rd (one of the 8 "passes" is an out and back on the road), they substituted Airport Rd right across from Turtle Rock. That wouldn't make anywhere near the mileage/climbing equivalent of losing both sides of Ebbetts though ... the only practical replacement would likely be repeating most of Monitor.

They could add Kingsbury Grade, but it's in Nevada and may need permits for a large event like this. I would guess Luther Pass is the easiest to add, perhaps both sides (down to South Lake Tahoe and back up). Or past Carson Pass to Kirkwood and Kit Carson (and back). None as good as Ebbets though.

No way it will be open by then. I find it strange that the organizers haven't put out some kind of official announcement yet. They're going to have a big mess on their hands if they don't do so soon. I think the only real option is to do repeats on Monitor. Luther is too busy for an event of that size, IMO. So is Kingsbury. Blue Lakes would be an option, but it's not completely open yet and it's not all that climby, anyway.

I was hoping to do the Alta Alpina Challenge this year and they sent out an e-mail a long time ago. Smart move on their part.

Death Ride - Tour of the California Alps
June 22 at 3:51pm
Good Afternoon Death Riders - we know everyone is anxious and so are we with regards to the status of the event and Ebbetts Pass. We are proceeding with our planning and we are keeping a positive attitude. Cal Trans is working hard along with the contractor on the road repairs. We have been notified that the repairs are proceeding nicely. The crews are working 6 days a week and 12 hour days. The highway is vital for our businesses and our community. Tourism is our lifeblood. Please remember that the road is closed for a reason - we also have been notified that riders are going around the gate and riding on the closed portion of the highway to see the damaged road. This is dangerous for the rider and the maintenance crews it also is against the law. We will post as we get information which isn't as fast as we would like it.
Thank you. Death Ride Staff

If you look in the comments following the Death Ride staff post of 6/22, which Kaminokaze quotes, you'll find this:

"Joe Childs - We camped at Silver Mountain City this weekend. Unofficially, the word from the road guys was that Ebbetts would open this coming Friday."

That would be 6/30. I hope Joe's info is good; Ebbetts is my favorite part of the DR.

Little more info

good news

""Lake Alpine, CA…Caltrans will swing the gates open past Lake Alpine at noon tomorrow to open Hwy 4 over Ebbetts Pass for the summer driving season. The snow has been cleared, 300 tons of rocks have been dynamited and removed, roads repaired and they are ready to go. Great Job Caltrans!!! Getting it open before Frog Jump will allow even more visitors to our area…""

I just found this video of what is happening up there

Props to them. Looks like they got a lot done in a short amount of time.

Tioga is open now, too. Ride on.

As of today, CalTrans has gotten it open.

Looks like sweet new pavement too!
