A bicyclist killed in a head-on collision with a vehicle Wednesday afternoon in unincorporated Contra Costa County has been identified as 46-year-old Maayan Jones of Novato.

The crash was reported around 4:30 p.m. on a narrow winding road called Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard near Diablo Ranch Drive, just outside of Mt. Diablo State Park.

Jones was transported to Athenian School by ambulance and then airlifted to a hospital, where he died Wednesday night.

Investigators said he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators. Anyone with additional details about the investigation is asked to call the CHP’s Contra Costa office at 925-646-4980.

This happened in the section of Mount Diablo Scenic, that most riders avoid by taking The Hole In The Wall.

Head-on, and the cyclist was going uphill. Many questions, but it's not impossible that he was on the wrong side of the road.

that section is narrow.... very easy for vehicles and cyclists when you are going down to eat more of the corner then your supposed too.... sad either way. No witnesses always means cyclist at fault.

Depends where exactly the incident was. If it was literally at that intersection, I cannot understand how it happened, as that portion is straight, with good visibility. I was surprised when I read about this accident, as I don't understand what could have happened on that section of the road. Could the car have been turning out from the side road and hit him? If it's after the crest of the hill, all bets are off. I halfway expect to come around that fast descent around the corner by the Hole and see a cyclist or car on my side of the road. I generally slow down through there, because it is very narrow, and if a car is occupying the middle of the road, it can be deadly.

I saw the white painted memorial bike on my last trip through the area. The memorial is just around the corner from the hole in the wall heading toward the mtn. So if indeed that's where the incident was, it does not surprise me one bit. Very sad, that corner is always very dangerous to ride through, and I will be going even slower around that corner from now on. Both directions. It's also sad because the jerks who are responsible for trying to scare cyclists from using the hole/Diablo CC cut through could be putting more riders at risk, especially if they succeed in getting the hole closed up.
