beautiful tree. any history on it? who planted it? reminds me of one I planted w/ my Dad over 50 years ago, but died many years ago, I don't remember why, if I ever knew

The builder put a tree in each front yard in the development back in 61'. This is the last one in my area. A retired state botanist was out front taking pictures of it a couple of years ago and he gave me a little talk about this tree. He said it was a canoe birch which was used by native Indians. He pointed out it was having some issues and usually only lived for 60 years. I trimmed it back to shape it but not sure it will make it to spring.

I apparently slept through a real Frog-Strangler, as my Dad would have said. Almost 3" of rain between 2 AM and 8 AM. Supposedly, tomorrow will be sunny. Here's hoping!

We've been getting flood warnings for days - and here we are.
Walnut Creek, east end of downtown where the creek is and the floods always begin... streets closed for floods.
Looks good for Diablo NYD tomorrow though - I'm getting excited.

Sacramento County and others are pretty flooded now, especially around the Cosumnes River. It's still coming down pretty hard, supposed to stop around 11:00 tonight. At least it'll be done for the New Year celebrations, lol. 🙄

Oh well, tomorrow's another day, and another year. No rain tomorrow, they claim. 🤔😉

I should've checked before I rode out there at 7am expecting crowds of fitness people on The Mountain. Instead I got a closed Gate and Diablo denied.

At least you were in a vehicle. 😉 I left Folsom this morning, around 5:00, and immediately found 2 large trees blocking the bike path. I went a short way to the dirt trail, and it was badly eroded, so that you had to walk on that weird rock layer, normally hidden by dirt.

Lots of new ponds, that used to be fields, and when I finally made it to Nimbus Flat (only a mile or two), there were 2 more trees blocking the path, bigger than the other 2. 😒

The crazy thing is, the MUP was in great shape, going west, with just leaves & smallish branches down.

I saw lots of bikes and walkers/joggers there too, around Nimbus Flat & Gold River. Looked like an organized ride. Was one of them you?

Yeah no kidding. At a gas stop, we felt the full force. A few times the trailer just seemed too light and it was nervous making.
I'm reading with interest because this is my commute route. Where were the down trees? I normally go through Waterford apartments to pick up the bike trail at the south corner, enter the park at Iron Point and exit at the pedestrian overpass. They will probably be gone by the 2nd. This drought-drench cycle kills trees and then blows them over

Crystal Springs through Hillsborough had several deep pools half the width of the road, plus a few slides onto the bike lane, and a couple places with mud, gravel etc all across the road. Then it was closed, between Polhemus and the Dam. So I rode up to the Ralston Trail, where Ralston/Polhemus go over 92. The trail was closed. So I went home. 13 muddy miles. I feel like I spent more time cleaning my bike than I did riding it!

BTW, as I was riding up Polhemus toward the trailhead, I saw other riders heading downhill, so I thought, "None of them are waving me off, so Ralston Trail must be open! They must have come up it, as the alternative to Crystal Springs!"

Then, on the way back downhill, I saw a lot of other riders coming up Polhemus toward the trailhead. I didn't wave them off.

Earlier in the day we did see some cyclists in the Central Valley - south of Bakersfield at the intersection of CA highways 119 and 43. The truck stop was by a bike trail that goes to nearby (ish) Lake Evans reservoir. Given how things were later and further north, I hope those people made it home ok.

I have no idea where Waterford apartments is, lol, might go right past, but wouldn't have known. 🤔

The trees that jammed me up some, were on the downhill curve, going towards that small wooden bridge near the freeway. If they're not cleared, you'll only need to back up 1/8 or 1/4 mile, to take the unpaved trail.

The bigger ones were right at the Aquatic Center, blocking the paved trail, but not the dirt trail that goes into the beach area. The only way that would jam ya, is if they're cutting them up, right when you went by. But that's probably not too likely, I'd think they'd wait for commuters.

Update from MDSP: SGR and Summit Road will open Jan 2 - NGR apparently has more damage but I haven't seen photos.

We're getting the usual flooded roads, downed trees, yadda yadda yadda. Somehow Ferndale Bridge just keeps on keepin' on. Between the water and the earthquake damage, I'm not looking forward to Wednesday's high winds.

Back in the day of backyard garbage service it wasn't unusual to find a can under a broken drain pipe. If trash was in a plastic bag it would just be floating on the top. If not, we had to strain it like a pot of noodles, lol. These automated trucks don't care. I've seen them lift 1000 pounds.
