Did the Chico Wildflower for the first time...OK, it was just the "Mildflower" 65 miler! It was still my longest ride to day, and my first big supported ride experience. Up until yesterday, it was just me an maybe one or two other people on bikes sweating up some climbs. I have to say it was an amazing event, and a TON of fun! Thousands of friendly riders, excellent lunch stop, beautiful scenery, and a hell of a descent. I hit a top speed of 49.5mph, which is another first for me. I'll definitely be riding the full century next year, and also want to do Tour of the Unknown Coast which takes place in early May.
I'm looking for a first century to ride later this summer, but somewhere that isn't 100F! Any suggestions?

My flatlander cycling club from Fresno took a field trip to the Eastbay on Sunday to ride Mt Diablo. It was my first time on the mountain. We started at North Gate HS and rode up to the summit and back, 27ish miles. The weather was great, but it brought out swarms of these annoying gnats at the top (is this normal?). I had read all over the web (especially here) about the route and sufficiently scared myself beforehand. I was really stressing about the last short stretch, but grunted and ground up it ok. The dad of one of our members lives just a block away from the school and put on a nice post ride barbeque for us. It was a really fun day.
I was stopped about halfway up and was admiring the view when a guy stopped and asked if I wanted him to take my picture. Nice.

I noticed the same thing riding up Mt Hamilton this weekend as well - lots of bugs swarming around me. It's not as though I was climbing so fast they had any problem keeping up with me ...

Diablo weather is grand right now. You might hit some wind, but you never know till you're there.
Enjoy your climb!

Took a shortish ride to test out my new pedals on Foothill Expwy on Sun morning. I was riding NW and I was wondering why I kept seeing so many people jogging in the SE direction with vans shadowing a lot of them or people getting in while others were getting out. Wasn't until I got home that I found out it was part of "The Relay" - the 199-mile team relay from Calistoga to Davenport. I also then discovered one of my buddies was participating in it. Go figure.

On Sunday I did a 30 mile loop from my house up and over Windemere Parkway down to Dublin and back. I got to to the far end fast, and got pounded by wind all the way back.

I did the Delta Century.
Wind was fierce, gusting up to 40 at times. 50 miles outbound into it was no fun at all. Got to the 60 mile bail out point and put my head down and kept on turning. I missed a turn somewhere and cut out 10 miles, fine by me. Coming back was another story, hitting 28 on the flats with minimal effort. I have yet to do a full 100 mile ride (82-86-89) and thought this flat ride would be easy. Beautiful ride though, lots of stretches on lonely delta roads, not a soul in sight. Views of Diablo and the Sierras.
In regards to the Sequoia Century - Redwood Gulch is nasty, will do that or the Sierra Century (100k versions.) Next 100 mile attempt (failure is not an option on this one) is the Crater Lake Century.

MTB ride this weekend! Couldn't resist the warm weather, tacky trails, and the lure of Bidwell Park's South Rim Trail.
About a mile in, trail after this point gets pretty technical:
Past the hard part, aka Tennis Ball Hill.
Just past the Bloody Pin cutoff trail from Guardians Trail. Just one final climb and then some fun downhill to Ten Mile House Road (Green Gate Rd.):
Looking back east towards Chico:

We (wife and I on the tandem) did the Delta Century on Sunday. Figuring the Delta century would be flat we rode Empire grade and Swanton loop on Staurday (55miles 4200 feet). To say we were totaly flogged by the end of Sunday is not doing the misery justice winds howled all day. Unless the wind was coming from directly behind the effort to keep the bike upright seemd to negate the benefit of any tail wind. How windy was it............I started to talk to another rider after getting the post ride meal which included a salad, while I was talking to him the salad blew off my plate, had to hold onto water bottles while eating so that would not blow away. Had to be the worst winds I have ever ridden in. I would recomend this ride to anyone, support is great, traffic is minimal and it was the wind that made Eddy the monster he was
