I crashed last weekend at the CCCX Circuit Race in monterey (writeup at https://ahpook.tumblr.com/post/3825774508/crashed ) and though I didnt lose consciousness I definitely identifiy with the post-event trauma/panic. Definitely helps to know there are others in the same situation and to realize theres a process going on...

34 Miles, 3100 feet of climbing out and back to the Junction Ranger Station on Mt. Diablo.
Unremarkable on most days, just a basic after work type ride.
Memorable though, for doing it on my Univega Gran Turismo in a pouring rain.

A couple years ago Bigbossman helped me rescue this bike from Craigslist.
He stripped it down to frame and fork, put a mixed Tiagra/Sora triple group
on it with modern (cheapo Alex) 700c sized wheels. Most of the time it sits on my trainer and gets a ton of use there, but I do like to get it on the road from time to time. Yesterday I slapped on my race blade fenders and my rain gear and I had a great time up on the mountain.

The Gran Turismo is an early 80's tourer with really long chain stays and a lot of fork rake.
I had done some longish rides on it, notably 2 totally flat Giro D' Vino metrics. Never having tried it, I was a little nervous about what technical descending would be like on it.
So just for grins, why not add rain to the mix?

Strangely it was a nimble and sure descender on the wet mountain road.
I felt really in control and I got a very responsive road feel from the steel frame.

A lot of fun. Wildlife seen: Coyote, 2 Deer, 2 Rabbits

Holy hailstones, Batman. I didn't even want to go outside to check the mail on Saturday.

I did hit the trainer for an hour. My technique for the day: Watch TV on the laptop, spin away, then sprint like mad during the commercials.

No riding this weekend, Bella spent time on the stand. I lovingly cleaned, inspected and repacked her wheel hubs yesterday.

I get discouraged from being active on rainy days, unless I'm in Tahoe strapped to my snowboard when it's snowing

Between work demands, family stuff, and the weather, I still haven't been out in March. This is really starting to suck.

At least last weekend was a fun anniversary weekend with the bestest wife in the whole wide world.

10 Avila Rd Hill Repeats. 14.71 miles with 3546 climbing. No rain.
After a quality morning and afternoon with the family, I got up there at 4PM.
Nice for me it is around the corner from my house. Got my 10 in before dinner.
10 Avilas = 1 Mt. Diablo (rough math)
So it is a good training session when time is tight.

Surprisingly, I was able to ride both days this weekend. Saturday, 36 miles on fixie, and did Portola loop. Got completely drenched, but after Camino Real, I'm used to it. Sunday, got in 20 more miles, didn't get as wet, but it still did rain on me.

Did a nice three hour ride. I was caught in a short down pour near Palo Alto, but the rest of the ride was fairly dry. I even saw sun on Canada. It started to rain heavily after I came back. It was strange, because usually it's the opposite. I ride in heavy rain, and when I come back sun comes out. The new fenders worked great! The rear one extends more then half way down the back wheel, so water spray is reduced by quite a bit. In retrospect maybe I should have left the mud flap to discourage ninja drafters.

Flying Foot Doc

On Saturday, my wife & I rode our hybrid bikes through a new park trail from PGA Boulevard to Riverbend Park, on hardpacked gravel. Saw a photographer shooting a video of a baby owl. 11 Miles

On Sunday we rode our road bikes in the Red Cross ride from Jensen Beach to Fort Pierce. She still has not found a road bike saddle she likes. She tried my Specialized Toupe, did not like it at all. 30 miles.
