I rode the "Tuesday ride" on my own yesterday, with some extra climbs. 31 miles. 260 miles in the last two weeks, with 30 miles of running in between. My (old) body is starting to complain - I've dropped almost five pounds and with it some strength. Eat more? Whewwww.......

A couple of times around the Winters RR loop with some teammates Sunday morning. They all said "Cantelow's not too bad. It's not even really a climber's climb. More of a power climb. You shouldn't have any problems."

I got dropped on that climb last year.

That avg grade of 3.2% is very deceptive. The last half mile is a lot steeper and it hurts.

I'm going to get into shape this year and not do so poorly.

Yes, the worst was when it was decided to do the back (west) side. I had a 39-25 low gear and thought I might have to get off and walk up. Brutal.

I agree. Lance says he is preparing for DMD but I have been thinking that's only an excuse prep ride for his actual goal. Whatever that is. I wasn't thinking RAAM but Furnace Creek 508 could be a real target.
Here are my 2011 Lance predictions: DMD, Terrible Two, and Mt. Tam Double claiming the Triple Crown Stage jersey. Then FC 508 as an exclamation point.

I had to go to a Journalism conference in Sacramento. Fortunately it's the Doubletree Hotel is close to the their big bike trail. I rode a bit every day and even got 38 miles in on morning. What a different experience. It's so flat! My neighborhood loop has almost 2000 feet of climbing in 30 miles. This had virtually none. Garmin read a couple hundred, but you can't feel it at all.

Do you think that has to do with slight changes in barometric pressure coupled with the fact that the satellites for the gps can never be perfect? I've seen that people get 5k of climbing in a century with a Garmin 305 out in Florida.

I think it has to do with smoothing, and what counts as a climb. Really, every tiny anything is a "climb" and you have to figure out how to count it, or not count it.*
Plus, I exaggerate just a bit. It is by a river, and that river does flow downhill, so there is SOME climbing as you head east. It just isn't much. There are any real hills.

The Gramin shows a total elevation fluctuation of 100 feet, but lots of little bumps.

That Florida century? I think the Garmin got lost.

* It's like the "How many miles is the coast of England" question. It depends on how close you measure it. Loosely, or do you measure the distance around every rock and grain of sand? You get really different lengths depending on which method you use.. It's oddly related to Fractals. /teacher_mode

Gee3 was in the neighborhood so joined us for our Sunday shop ride. Despite the distance and the headwind he took his pulls and hung like a champ. We enjoyed his energy and easy laugh. 38 mostly-flat miles with a couple rollers at the end, just for grins.

So what did you think of the Bike Trail (American River Bike Trail)? Pretty nice huh? When the pros were out here for the ToC, many teams rode around the trail to stretch the legs and had good things to say about it. Nice scenery and a lot of miles available.

Rode the Tierra Bella at Gilroy today, I did the metric century. I was a fantastic ride, a beautiful day, with great friends, and wonderful support and organization by ACTC. That's quite a club! Wow, did I ever eat!!! The ride itself was a good mix, with plenty of climbing, long flat stretches, and lots of scenery. A strong tailwind on the home stretch made for a 26MPH sprint for over four miles to the finish! What a great day - thank you, ACTC!!

Kids had a track meet in Livermore so I took the bike there in the minivan. Rode home while the family drove. Rode 55 miles via Collier Canyon, Highland, Tasajara and a Mt. Diablo summit climb. Got 4925 climbing in.

Rode with Midland on what has become one of our favorites. It is kind a of a figure eight out of Concord. Over Benicia Bridge, then loop around Lake Herman Rd and Columbus Parkway to Benicia Rd. Crockett Bridge to Crockett. (gotta get a at sammy the Valona deli, yum) Then McKewn Rd, Pig Farm, The 3 Bears and Happy Valley climbs. Finally nice Iron Horse glide back home.
66 miles with 4900 climbing.

Sheriff department were in force this morning on Canada. Yesterday they were at STP harassing motorcyclists, I guess they are spreading the love and revenue collection efforts.

Decided to take it easy this weekend, so my riding was a bit on the lite side ... Sat, did Kings Mtn and W. Alpine ... Sun did Redwood Gulch and Saratoga Gap. Great weekend for riding, and accomplished PB's all weekend.

Saturday - Double Dip; AM ride at Lake Chabot on the Rigid, and in the afternoon fired up the Full Sus. for a cow rutted run into Diablo Foothills.
Sunday - Did a preview of a VS ride I am leading starting at Finley Rd and going UP into Morgan Territory. Beautiful weather and great views.

I went to SoCal last weekend and rode Mt Baldy. It was a hot day (93F), and there was no shade what-so-ever. But it was really weird because you can still see the snow capped Mt Baldy at the same time.
