On Sunday rode out and did a Coperpopolis RR course loop. Missed the left turn, got lost and ended up in Coperpopolis. After backtracking and help from locals was able to find my way back. Unfortunately didn't bring enough food and was crashing in the last fifteen miles, was barely doing 100W. Oh yeah the pavement didn't improve much, if anything it gotten worse. Descending was interesting. The handlebars were vibrating so violently it was impossible to have any kind of solid grip on them.

No riding this week but a good hike on a fantastic MTB Trail above Tahoe. It was a good climb from Incline Village to the Flume trail above Sand Harbor Beach. The views are to die for, the riding must be fabulous, usually from Spooner Lake (south) going northbound to Incline. We were hiking in opposite direction and saw several riders. One part of the trail is very narrow and above a very steep cliff, not for the faint of heart. Several riders were pushing the bike along the narrowest parts, one woman looked particularly uneasy and scared but some kids were riding it like it was a 4 lane highway. There's actually a 30 feet section where all have to walk the bike.

That looks amazing! I'm jealous.

Did a groovy little ride over east OLH, Haskins Hill, Stage and Lobitas/Tunitas. It was my longest ride since the Davis Double, and it set the stage for a brick run immediately after (yes, I'm "training" for a triathlon). The best part was discovering a nice new hill (Lobitas Creek).

Total was 112 miles with something more than 8000 feet of climbing.

San Mateo to OLH via Canada, down 35 and back home. First time climbing OLH this year - MAN am I out of shape! Descending 35 was a nightmare - all my descending skills seem to have vanished (see 'Sheesh!' thread. I need to get back to where climbing doesn't leave me nauseous and gasping for air, and descending is the reward, not a further punishment!

Last Friday, went with a friend up Highway 9 for both of our first times. Last year, I had climbed it to Redwood Gulch and it was kinda tough then. This year, was expecting to be gasping for air and it wasn't nearly as bad as I had thought it would be. I was really slow, but I made it up in reasonable comfort. Went North on 35 from there and down Page Mill and meandered on Altamont and back to the valley floor and over back to my apartment. Total was about 43 miles and climbed about 2800 or so. Next weekend I think I am going to torture myself a good bit more.

Sometimes magic happens. Today was one of those times. A La-La ride with my family and in impromptu visit to my parents so they could see the grand kids in full regalia with their road bikes. It was a perfect 16 miles of smiles in Pleasant Hill and Martinez looping along the Canal Trail and Iron Horse Trail (note how Lanceyoungstrong is rocking his dad's Garmin quite proudly, He and his sister shared it, 8 miles each, today)

That's awesome. What a great picture, suitable for framing.

My weekend started with the usual Saturday morning PV ride then a day at the park with the kids all riding their bikes. Today I handed water bottles out at the feedzone of the Patterson Pass road race then came to take the kids to the park again to ride their bikes. Very fun weekend indeed.

Marin 100K on the tandem. Only saw a few tandems this year, but I expect most of the tandem were doing the 100 mi and would have left NLT 0700. We left registration at 0745.

cccorlew 08-08-10 11:01 PM

42 miles, lotsa climbing, Walnut Creek --> Danville --> Diablo Summit.
It wasn't enough. Must hammer more.

Red Rider 08-08-10 11:42 PM

Saturday we rode the tandem over Cantelow and rode into Winters, looking for a place that served iced tea (I had a craving) and was bike-friendly. Berryessa Gap was open for wine tasting but that wasn't on the agenda, so we rode home. 30-ish miles. Legs fried.

Today we did the shop ride, which is geared for beginners. What, no beginners? Over Cantelow and another Winters loop, this time with significant headwinds. Lost the group when I flatted (darn you, star thistles!) and 3 of us battled the headwinds back home. 35 miles of suffering. Argh.

genejockey 08-09-10 12:32 AM

47 miles, but it felt like farther with the wind. At least 4 times, it felt like the wind was blowing the bike out from under me. Two of those were on fast downhill - fortunately straight.

Mt Tam century on Saturday. Left kind of late, was in one of the last groups the whole time. Weather was kind of cool which was nice. A bit tougher but more enjoyable than the regular century. Lots of climbing but even my dad made it under 7 hrs so it wasn't bad. They had soda at every stop which was really nice b/c i think that keeps me going more than anything

Wild Hilacious Century Series

About 30 riders came up for the Packsaddle Century in the Tahoe/Sierra. The Packsadlle is the 4th ride in the Alta Alpina/Bike Habitat Wild Hillacious Century Series which features one century a month from May thru September. Each has at least 10,000 ft of climbing and also has a metric route with about 6,000 ft.

Wild Hilacious Century Series

The Packsaddle heads right up Old Meyers Grade and Johnson Pass above Echo Summit on Hwy 50...no warm-up here!

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...dLake814BF.jpg

Blue Lake Rd is the next to last climb........seen here along the flanks of Markleeville Peak.
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...oad814BF-1.jpg

If it makes you feel any better, I felt dead after only a 38 mile jaunt on Saturday - but at least mine was in the SC mountains. I visited the "rollers" on Skyline.

And Sagebum, your description and photos of that ride are inspiring. It looks absolutely beautiful.

Lanceoldstrong 08-22-10 09:07 PM

With Midland:

Mt. Hamilton Rd. from San Jose to the summit
Then over the other side to the bottom and back to the summit up the back side.
Finally back down from the summit to San Jose where the car was waiting at Kirk and Mckee.

50 miles with 7000+ feet of climbing. Kind of tough, but one for the bucket list.

gaucho777 08-23-10 03:51 PM

From Berkeley, up Spruce & Grizzly Peak and down Wildcat Canyon, around San Pablo and Briones resevoirs via San Pablo Dam Road and Bear Creek Road, then back up Wildcat Canyon and back down Spruce. About 40 miles & 4600+ ft of climbing in all. Beautiful weather, and not too hot for a summer day in Contra Costa.

UmneyDurak 08-23-10 04:34 PM

I rode around in circles. It's what kool kids do now days. :bike2:
