Where do I go to find out about NorCal events?
I'd like to do a metric this year. That's my goal anyway. I'm logging miles on the road and at the gym in preparation. I've never ridden more than 42 miles at a time. Where can I find out about events though? I want to have an event in mind as a goal. Thanks.

Try here:

You're in luck - there's an easy one coming up Feb 11th. The Rice Valley Tandem Rally just north of Yuba City. Very easy, very scenic. If you can't finish this one, you're not ready.
Seriously - if you can do 42 miles now, another 18 isn't going to kill you. Especially if there's no climbing involved.
See you there.....

Events
You might try Active.com.
There's an event in Ione called the Party Pardee in April that is a good metric century. It's challenging for me .. a recreation and fitness rider...and fun. Ione is outside Sacramento.

Kings River Blossom Bike Ride
This is a very nice ride along the San Joaquin Valley "Blossom Trail." There are four rides, a 10 mile, a 25 mile, a 45 mile and a 100k. You can get more information here:

The blossom ride is great, have done the 100k the last 2 years as my boss helps obtain all the food and drink for the support stations. (He's a Lions clubber). The 100k starts at the Kings River in Reedley on the valley floor and then ventures up into the foothills for awhile, crosses the highway near Squaw Valley, descends back down into Wonder Valley, then rejoins the river and follows it through Centerville back to the start point in Reedley's Cricket Hollow park. A pretty good lunch of catered Mexican food is served at the end.
The California Central Valley is beautiful in early March, with blossoms on all the fruit trees usually, and even more beautiful I think are the green rolling foothills.

I also enjoy the home century/metric, Foxy's Fall Classic. The metric has maybe 200' in climbing, but the wind can be bad. October (2007 is yet to be posted, but should be same route)

You should be able to ride three times your typical distance comfortably in similar conditions. So if your typical ride is 20 miles, 60 is pretty feasible, as long as the course is similar to your typical ride.
