Info for a ride across the US
 

I posted this in the touring section, but this section gets more views so I thought I'd put it here as well:

I want to plan a ride across the US for June and July and am looking for information, tips, route etc. Are there books on the subject, or websites? Any suggestions on where I should start my research?

Josh, the best resource for routes (and tips) would be adventure cycling association -- http://www.adv-cycling.org/.

I might also suggest reading some of the journals at http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/

Check into the RAAM site, race across america. Might have some good route info there. A friend did the RAAm this past year. All I remember is that no-one like Kansas.:rolleyes:

I rode across Kansas with Bikecentennial in '76 and remember the nice people and nasty wind. Others coming toward us had obvious wear on one side of their tires from leaning into the wind from the south. Eastern Kansas was my favorite, between Lawrence and Pittsberg (sp?).

Missouri was hot. Damn hot! Town bar to air conditioned town bar. Did 110 miles in 110 degrees, tires on my fully loaded bike leaving deep tracks in the pavement, going from Missouri to Carbondale, Illinois. College party town attended by many friends at the time, eagerly anticipated in the middle of my trip. Another story.8^)

Bikecentennial became Adventure Cycling. They have great maps. I still have all mine from the summer of '76. They publish a magazine too. I grace the cover of their 20th anniversary issue, I forget the month in '96. The incident of their taking my picture is another great story I have from the trip. Go!!!
