Riding tomorrow if anyone want's to join

My 60 miles today felt like not enough for this weekend.

If anyone wants to ride tomorrow (late-ish start time, like noon or so), PM or call me.

I'll probably do like 60 miles again with 5000+ climbing if possible.

Let me know,

Marco

That ride was pretty awful. I'm blaming the organizer.

I would have joined up but I'm up in San Francisco today. Did the standard Pete Mt. Tam ride. Very windy all day. I was all set in the head to enjoy a nice hotdog after all the climbing up to the summit. However the little hut was closed up today so no food at top. I was starting to worry as the big toes started to get too cold but they did warm up by the time I got back to Sausalito. 60 miles on the dot.

So, how'd it go, Marco? Apart from the wind, it looked like a nice day for it.

OK Ride Report :

I rode with Ruth's Brother-in-law, Mel. We Started at Bunker Hill/35/280 interchange at around 1:45 PM

I felt pretty bad for him, since he was really eager to try this ride, but had not been riding very much lately. So he got shelled pretty hard on Tunitas. He is normally a pretty strong rider.

I ran into this guy from PennVelo 4 different times on the ride. Every time I passed him, he latched on to my wheel, and could not blow anymore snot rockets or anything, since he was truly drafting like 3" from my wheel.

- First time was on Crystal Springs, but I turned up the hill to meet my friend at Bunker Hill, while he took Polhemus and the ped/bike bridge thingy.
- Second time was on Caņada, Mel and I passed him, but he passed us at Edgewood when we stopped to fix Mel's brake adjustment).
- Third time... I passed him again on Mountain Home, and he latched on my wheel again. However, Mel fell back a bit so I pulled off to slow down for Mel. (I knew he was heading toward OLH, so I had a secret goal of catching and passing him on the climb, so I let him go).
- Fourth Time... See below...

So Mel and I get to OLH, I look at my start time, and say see you at the top. So I proceed. Sure enough like a mile into the climb, I see the PennVelo guy. I pass him However he kicked up his pace and latches on to my wheel again We stayed together for the whole climb taking turns on who was kicking it up a notch. I would stand on some switchbacks, and he would fall back a tiny bit. Then he took the front and I would fall back a bit. Then I would catch back up and take the front for a bit and so on. Anyway, this took place the entire climb until the end, he decided to sprint where the mailboxes were so he could beat me up the hill by about 15 seconds. I thought about Tunitas coming up and decided it wasn't worth it.

I made it up OLH in 22:05. Chatted with the PennVelo guy for a few mins, and went back down the hill to find Mel

I found him climbing around the "Upenuf" street sign. I turned around and climbed the rest of the way with him.

Then we went to the 84/35 junction at Skylonda. I put on my gloves and ate a gel pack.

After that we headed out down W84. This where the wind was really bad. I usually go down that decent much faster, but the wind was really whipping it up. We ran into a couple riders heading to Pescadero Creek Road at the 1-lane construction stop light. They decided to join our paceline. I decided to pull the whole way. I cranked it up into the wind, pushing 35+ mph (I could really feel my legs taking a killing at this point). I started to pull away from the paceline, so Mel ended up pulling the other two guys while I was off the front for a bit. A little later, the wheelsuckers took off at Pescadero Creek, and I turned down the pace so Mel could latch back on.

Then we got to the flat section of 84 into San Gregorio. For me this was the most brutal part of the ride. The wind whipped up like crazy I felt like a damn kite. I pulled down the stretch at like 13-16 mph in the small ring. At this point I needed to eat, but toughed it out until the San Gregorio General Store. I got a Gatorade to mix with the existing dilute Gatorade in my bottles, and I got a coffee because I was DAMN COLD!! I ate a cliff bar and a gel. Then we took off up the little climb on Stage. This hill did not feel so little at this point.

I waited for Mel who wasn't too far behind, and we took off down HWY 1. The view was beautiful (as always). Of course it was super windy (as always).

Then we got to Tunitas. I could tell right away that Mel was burnt.

Of course, I didn't want to fly up to the top and wait forever, so I stuck with him during the easy part (first 3 miles). On the steep part (second 3 miles), I would take off of a couple switchbacks, then turn around to Mel, then go up the switchbacks again. I repeated this several times. I think I did Tunitas 1.5x by the time it was over.

I stopped at Star Hill for a nature break and then go out a Cliff Bar which i gave half to Mel. That seemed to help him out. By then it was getting pretty cold and windy.

We went on a freezing cold descent down Kings (which was really fun otherwise).

Then headed toward Robert's Market. Mel was too cold and tired to do the final stretch down Caņada, so we called Ruth for a ride home.

Fun ride. I really like Tunitas. We have to do this ride another time. I think my climbing legs are starting to feel stronger.

I got 60 miles and who knows how much climbing, since I kept turning around (usually on the steepest parts - on purpose - of course). Probably around 6000 ft. Ride time was 4:20.

HAHAHA. That was pretty awesome.

I almost laughed out loud at work, when he was talking about Kelly McGillis dressed as a guy in the elevator

Ride summary could have been a lot shorter:

"Droped the hamer on the fully kitted poseur. Did 160 miles. Avg 31.3 mph. Made my brother-in-law crack."
