Google Maps Diablo

This is the coolest. You can take a virtual ride up Diablo through Google Maps!

Go to GooogleMaps here, then enter this address:

1284 N Gate Rd Walnut Creek, CA 94598

Then click on the little photo that says STREET VIEW. You can turn 360° and look up and down and head up the Mountain with simple mouse clicks.

When they drove past the Junction, of course there were a bunch of riders hanging out - I'd love to know who these people are - anybody?

Apparently they have some cars with cameras that drive around and take photos of everything. You can probably look up your house too... my lawn was full of leaves when they came by my neighborhood!

Street View is old news for the South Bay and Peninsula areas

It's crazy the number of roadway segments they have photographed now. They even have stuff around La Honda, etc...

They drive around these GPS and 360 deg. camera equipped Chevy Cobalts.

Okay, I'm out of touch, but I've seen that cobalt a number of times, with gear mounted all over it. I always found myself thinking.. I guess now I know.. interesting

In front of my building there was a guy that had been climbing up California street but I can't get enough resolution on the guys face. You can also see my car in the driveway along with license plate and see in my window. I wish I had known when the were driving by I would have mooned them with my BikeForums jersey on. That would have been great.Pete

Well its off the taxedermist for me.. I'm going to get a yard full of nasty looking pitbulls, gators, T-rex's, whatever.. so if the google perv mobile rolls by... then my place will look the most uninviting. Or I could just stand outfront in my underwear, that might do the trick too.

It looks like the car went up SGR and Summit Road, then came back down and did NGR based on the angle of the shots. So there are Junction photos at two different times with a different set of riders there.

I can tell about when he went by my house because there's a contractor pick-up in our driveway from when we had some work done. Puts it in about a 2 month window last fall.

As Google has a presence in the EU, where privacy is a bit higher priority than it's in the US, they're currently working on face-recognition technology (the type that you see on digital cameras), and then blurring out the faces in their street-views. That probably won't be available until next year though.
