SF to 92/Canada Routes

Looking for a quicker, better, faster alternative to Skyline -> Sawyer Camp? I did that today. The trail is the slow part, but nice today as I was in no hurry. Why hello hot house wife jogger!

Looking to make the PV ride and trying to maximize the amount of time I can sleep in.

I don't know if it's faster with all the stop lights, but El Camino Real can be pretty fast on an early Saturday or Sunday morning when there's hardly any cars out. Then the only climbing is up Crystal Springs Rd to Skyline. (I know what you mean about the joggers :D).

I drive thru the residential area of Redwood Shores every day, so I know what you mean. :D

I must be getting old, though. They all have strollers.

So?

I've taken the streets starting from the end of the San Andreas Lake trail (starting near San Bruno Ave on Skyline/35... so if you come up Skyline/35 from San Francisco and don't mind the climbing you can take the street route instead of Sawyer Camp Trail. You can go at your own speed but you miss the hawt moms jogging the trail. It was closed a couple weeks back so I had to find my way via the streets. I don't remember the streets off the top of my head so I used google to get the street names...

The end of the San Andreas trail drops you off at Larkspur. So take a Left onto Larkspur and a right onto Skyline Blvd. Following Skyline to the dead end and it diverts you to the left onto Milbrae Avenue. Take the next right, which will be Vallejo Dr. Follow Vallejo Dr. and it turns left into Frontera Way. From there make a right onto Hunt Dr.

Hunt Dr then leads to a right onto Trousdale Dr. Trousdale will lead you to Skyline Blvd. again, so make a left on Skyline Blvd. and follow that. This will take you to Golf Course Drive where you'll make another Right.

From Gold Course Dr. you make a Left back onto Skyline Blvd. and it will lead all the way to Canada Rd.

I'm sure you can clean up my directions to make it more legible but you get the idea.

Just beware of trail closures. When we got back they had closed off the San Andreas Lake trail due the dry/hot weather and possibilties of fire. That was also the reason we had to take the street route since Sawyer Camp Trail was closed.

Good luck.

That's it. I'm compiling a list of my favorite (and memorable) scenes/scenarios: kitted up girls (especially Tibco!) on carbon bikes with power-meters, fast women runners with matching visors and socks, spandex-ed up roller-blading ladies on Canada passing me, and, finally, girls in the pool with Ironman-issued swimming caps; they don't even have to swim!

One day, I would like to make a rap video with these characters.

Today went, Skyline to 280, to Skyline, Golf Links Road and viola! Not too bad.

BlastRadius 08-03-08 08:54 PM

You went on 280?

pelikan 08-03-08 11:48 PM

Yeah, I've seen people do it before, not nearly as bad as I thought. I just followed the signs.

Oh yeah, there. I was thinking you did that closer to Daly City.

I prefer 280 to the Vallejo/Neighborhood route, and both are far superior to Sawyer Camp. You can take the freeway to skip the San Andreas path as well by just staying on Skyline. That section is also pretty trivial. The only dodgy part is the offramp itself as the shoulders are more narrow and covered with eucalyptus crap. Stay as far to the right as possible, taking the lane is not advised as cars will be coming off the freeway blind and not expecting a bike in the middle of the lane.

I also find it preferable although not faster to bypass the on/offramps sections of 35 near 280/1 by taking a right on Westmoor(? - the last right before the offramps start), left on Skyline Drive, left on Gateway, left on Hickey. On foggy days this is much more comfortable/safe than staying on 35.

I used to take that way when I rode from Skyline to CSM to go from class to class several years ago.

Much faster than the trail.
