I just joined up this month. Seems like a good way to track my rides, indoors and outside. Any tips or tricks?

PS- The BF SoCal forum is stomping us in terms of numbers of riders and mileage. Are we going to stand for that???

I enjoy using bikejournal and there seems to be a good bunch of folks on there. The interface is a bit clunky but I have no plans to move. My wife is kicking my but on the miles this year !!

The one 100% must-have feature for any ride tracking side is the ability to draw routes and have them be auto-routed onto roads. Bikely has this. gmap-pedometer.com has it. bikejournal and bikewire don't.

The other 99% must-have feature is keyboard navigation of the mapping area (+/- to zoom in/out, arrow keys to scroll around). Bikely has this, most others don't.

I lost my garmin 305 and I'm too cheap to buy another so what I do after each ride is to draw it into bikely and save the route with a name like "20090107 Commute to work". I know it doesn't give me fancy stats like my average speed and what-not but I at least know the mileage and approximately how much climbing was involved. I care more about visualizing the path I took, not so much counting yearly mileage.

So for now I'm stuck with bikely even though there are some things about it that really irritate me (make a wrong click? too bad - no undo function!).

I use Bikely and then plug the results into Bikewire. Just trying to keep a cumulative log for 2009.

I use Bikely to map my routes, and will be using Bikewire in case I ever actually ride again to log miles/stats.

Numbers and stats won't do anything to actually help me improve, but I find that logging workouts and other stats is often a motivator and if nothing else you can at least see if you're making any progress.

Actually I've just decided that I like gmap-pedometer.com better than bikely when it comes to manually drawing a route. You can undo entire auto-routed segments with one click rather than treating the route as a series of hundreds or thousands of individual points that you have to manipulate individually.

I never really considered drawing the route on one site and importing it into another but that could be a workable option for me. I guess i'll give bikewire a second look

I haven't checked out bikewire, but one cool feature would be to import data into the site. But then again, you could just rely on motionbased or ascent for historical data for that.

This was killing me on Bikely for a while. Drawing routes using the trackpad on a laptop is sometimes painful, but I've just learned to unclick "auto follow roads" around busy intersections and to point the cursor at the correct side of the road on the map. If you are headed west, for example, on Foothill and click your route ahead on the south side of the road bikely will route you past the place you clicked to an intersection, turn around, and then follow the route back to where you clicked. It's annoying if aren't careful.

Haha, the vagaries of automapping on Foothill. It's almost sad how familiar I am with them.

I'm on bikejournal, it tracks what I need. The interface is really bad, and it's slow, so maybe I'll check out bikewire, but at some point I've got to stop signing up for every bike-related site I come across...

It blew my mind when I figured out that it was plotting to like, northbound or southbound lanes. After that, my experience has been much better and more reliable. Less "undue last point" clicking.

I manually mark points around freeways and on/off ramps as well because you never know when one click will add in a billion more that have to be undone one at a time. It's really bad too when you're plotting an epic ride and the memory footprint in any browser gets up over 150megs as it struggles to keep up.

I just signed up on bikewire. I didn't realize it had hooks into facebook ... seems to have integration into other social networking outlets. Can't figure out how to get it to allow me to put in a club, or even create a club. I also see quite a few others on bikewire too.

I have used bikejournal for almost 3 years it is hard to give up the familiar, but on the other hand I really like new things. It keeps me fresh. So now, thanks to this thread, I am using bikewire too.
