King of the Mountain: How about one thread to track PRs up certain hills?

I had to search for a while to find my old posting with my Diablo climbing time. I though it would be cool to have one thread (perhaps marked STICKY?) to track our times on various favorite hills. Anyone else interested?

Feel free to include other popular climbing routes...

I will start with mine, because it will make everyone else feel fast!

Diablo (from Athenian School to parking lot at the very top): 1:16:47 (1/17/09) 1:19 (on 1/1/09) and 1:22 (on 1/27/08)

Diablo (From North Gate Entrance Station to top): 79:14 = 1:19:14 (8/28/2010)

Three Bears Loop (clockwise from SPDR and Wildcat): 1:09 (on 11/22/08) (getting slower- 1:12 on 1/10/09)

Old La Honda (from bridge): 31:22 (on 10/4/08)

San Bruno Mtn: 25:00 (on 7/2/09) (was 25:10 on 2/24/09)

Tunitas Creek (from Highway 1 to stop sign at Skyline):

Hamilton (from ? to ?):

Others? Add your own...

Dear ROJA,

Here is a short laundry list of my PRs, as well as records for some of the hills:

Mt. Tam HC road race: 41':15" in 1986, the year Engleman rode it in 39':20". The record has since been broken by _______ _______ (?) a Webcor rider, in the past couple years.

Mt. Hamilton, from Alum Rock to the observatory sign: ~1h:03' (not a very fast time), record is held by Jonathan Boyer, 56' (!).

Hwy. 9 from first left turn out of Saratoga to Skyline: 34':50".

Alba Rd. Time Trial, 1983: 24':53"; record held by Jonathan Boyer, ~22'... super human.

Old La Honda: 20':01". I've never gone fast up this hill. Record held by Eric Heiden in something like 14' ... wow.

Mt. Diablo:

North Gate, as part of the "Coors Devil's Cup" in 1983: 47'.

South Gate from Athenian School as part of the inaugural benefit ride: 50'. Got a nice "Bear" jersey for that one.

There ya go. That's just the short list. You know how much we love this stuff. Thanks for starting the post. Looking forward to other's times.

This is a great idea! It would be fun to see peoples progress (regress?) and would be a good motivator (at least for me).

Great to have you here Matt. I’d love to go climbing with you one of these days..........on one of your easy days............

For Mt.Tam, what about using Fairfax-Bolinas Rd. To the Rock Springs parking lot. It’s the same route as the Mt. Tam Hill Climb without the flat section from Stinson. The cattle guard at the intersection of Fairfax-Bolinas Rd and Hwy.1 could be the starting point and the finish could be either Rock Springs or the East Peak. The record (from Stinson Beach) was set by Justin England in 2004 with 37:26. So from the cattle guard to Rock Springs he did it around 30:00 minutes or so. I think my best so far for that section is around 41:00. I’ll be happy to get it down around 36 ish sometime in the next year.

For San Bruno Mtn., a logical route would be the eastern side starting at the intersection of N. Hill Dr. and up Guadalupe Canyon, right turn through the park entrance parking lot (no gate jumping on the other side of the road!), under the road, up Radio Rd. to that strip of metal in the pavement at the top. My PB for this one is 19:20 which I did last week at the SBHC. (down from around 23:00 at the beginning of Dec.). My goal is to get it down around 17:00 by next year.

Now I'll have to ride all those hills again so I can time myself.

Only one I know so far is San Bruno Mountain in 21:17 (01/01/2009).

I hardly ever time my climbs but I've timed myself up Old La Honda on a few occasions. Each time I have set a new PR:

9/02/2006: 26:00 or so
9/10/2006: 24:25
8/15/2007: 23:20
8/20/2007: 22:08
4/12/2009: 21:52

Some day I'd like to break 20 minutes. I've actually had that goal since about August 2007 but obviously haven't pursued it very heavily

Edit: Added the most recent OLH time. I didn't realize it had been a year and a half since I last climbed it!

Tam (hill climb course)- Stinson Beach to parking lot via Bo/Fax 40:18 (9/15/2007)

Tam - Bo/Fax split - cattle grate to cattle grate - 17:56 (9/2006) - drafted Ned Overend & Lucas Euser all the way up, but I was leading at the top of Bo/Fax, then Euser attacked and I was dropped

Diablo (from Athenian School to parking lot at the very top): 45:48.7 (10/7/2007)

Old La Honda (from bridge): 15:35 on 10/10/09.

Hamilton - Around 1:03 split in the Mt. Hamilton RR

San Bruno - 14:56 (1/1/2007)

I should try to time it from now on. The only one that I can remember is OLH (from Bridge): 24:30 (approx.) on 12/26/08

Pizza Man.....we're not worthy! You've never timed OLH?! You'd probably challenge Heiden's record.

Some times that I remember:

OLH: 19:10
Diablo from Athenian: 57:20
Three Bears loop: 1:01ish (don't remember exactly)

I've only done Hamilton once but didn't time it. I've done Tam a few times but never timed the race course.

Where have you been man? I don't think I've seen you since, perhaps, the HMB ride.

Excellent times.

Oh, don't give me that, anyone who rides a bike is worthy.

Maybe I'll go for a time on OLH on President's Day, Feb 16 and afterward I can go over the top and watch the Tour of CA race up Tunitas. I'm still trying to figure out where I want to watch that stage.

Tunitas would be a great place to watch. Then again, GGB would be too. I'm not sure which would be harder to find spot to watch from though.

Hey Marco. Yeah, I've been out of the BF loop lately. Too much work, not enough riding, and a bit of travel. New Year's resolution: Ride more with the NorCal BF crew!

Regarding the Tour of California:

I just rode up Bonny Doon three days ago. I forgot how hard it is. The ToC description says it is not that big of a climb. Well, djyahhh, if you compare it to Euro climbs those guys are used to. Anyways, that will be a great place to watch, right where it turns onto Smith Grade. There will be some significant splits at this point in the race, and some heavy-duty suffering.

I agree with ROJA that this should be a sticky. Over at RBR they have a similar sticky and it's interesting to look at the times and how people improve.

Umm, that's 18.5 miles so he averaged 19.82mph the whole way up? I'd have a hard time riding that fast on the FLAT for 56 minutes.

Matthew
The fastest time for the Low Key hill climb this year was 1h 12min (besides the hybrid-motorized rig).

I'd say 1:03 is crazy fast.

I do a ride from near the Glen Park BART station to the top of Twin Peaks a lot. When I started last year, my time was about 28". (I'd just started biking.)

My best time now is about 19". But there are two three traffic lights in the middle, and I usually wait, sometimes up to a minute. I've never tried an all out sprint to the top, though. Should I?

The median time during the LKHC for Mt. Hamilton was 93:05. I made it in 128 minutes ...
