...here in Sacramento, finding someone asleep or passed out in one of those levee or railroad embankment tunnels here is not especially uncommon. It's also not uncommon to find a variety of debris or broken glass in them, winter and summer. In winter, it's because it's a little warmer and not raining in there. In summer, it's because it's a little cooler and out of the direct sun. I've pretty much stopped using the ones on my regular routes, and found other ways to go.

I deleted the original posting that described the incident after receiving a suggestion. But I have been back there and am pleased to note that there are lights in the tunnel and are now turned on. It’s nice to be safe.

That Ygnacio tunnel can be a little creepy - like it's too narrow or something, and you lose your depth perception.
I have to go through the tunnel under Hwy 242 sometimes - not as creepy, but dark and full of junk. The other day I almost ran into a shopping cart - saw it just in time.

Maybe get some cycling friends together and clean them out once in awhile? Up here in the boonies we have no shortage of volunteers for community cleanup/trail work; surely the Bay Area can come up with a few.
