Post Trainer Bonk

I had my typical breakfast this morning (homemade roll, cream cheese, coffee) and after getting the boy off to school, settled in for a trainer ride. Spent about an hour and 45 minutes pedaling and watching Disk 1 of the '06 Vuelta. There's some good climbing, so I spent a bunch of time in big gears with high resistance to simulate the climbs. Finished up, showered, ran an errand. Got home and had a serious bonk. Dizzy, headache, nausea, no energy, etc. Basically, all of the typical symptoms. Got some food in me slowly and more water and I'm find now.

Moral: eat on long, intense trainer rides!

Has this happened to you?

gpelpel 01-23-09 03:50 PM

Not on the trainer but it happened to me last Saturday after the 40 miles BF Cliff's East Bay Hills ride. I felt great during the complete ride including the tough climb back home. But after being home for 30 minutes I felt dizzy while waiting for lunch.
Once at the table I jumped on the bread and other carbs. The dizzying disappeared within 15-20 minutes.
After the bread/jam/soy milk breakfast I had only eaten a bag of Clif Shot Blocks during the ride which wasn't enough. My bottle that is usually filled with Accelerade only had pure water this time.

1:45 hour on the trainer is a long one that will deplete your body pretty good especially if you simulate climbing.

Addition to your moral: eat and drink on any long ride, indoor or outdoor!

George, I'm almost happy to hear you felt that ride.
I was really tired. I can climb those hills no problem, but going just that little bit faster trying to keep up with you guys killed me. I did 30 miles the next day and just limped along.

That Hammer gel has really become the magic bullet for me...and coffee for sure!

I was feeling really good during the ride so I tried to push myself. I was using Pete as a reference, I knew he kicks a.. so I challenged myself to test how far I could keep his pace. He lost me on Wildcat but it was the fastest pace I had ever climbed and I felt better and better as the ride progressed.
I just didn't realized I needed more fuel than usual.

I never tried Hammer, only Carb-Boom gels. Do they have blocks? I discovered blocks at the Death Ride (free samples) and really liked how convenient they are to use compared to the sticky gels. So that's what I am carrying now, one pack of 6 blocks is supposed to be the equivalent of 2 gels.

Jeeezzz. Taxi, it's Hammer Gel? And here I'd thought it was because you ride a zillion miles a week. Guess I'm gonna have to get me some o' that gel.Maybe the flavor with EPO in it....

What is your flava Pete? The caffeine-ated espresso is the only way to fly baby!!! I need to make a Hammer reorder SOOOOOON! Running low on my lifeblood. :p

Joel. You're an animal. I ride the trainer A HELLUVA LOT but I've never gone more than an hour. Some of the worst bonks I've ever had have been on that thing though. A few where I lie a towel down on the floor and lay prone for about 5 minutes fighting the urge to hurl. It's always those Coach Troy Spinerval videos that get me... Great fun! :o

Just trying to get faster and better at climbing. It was wet today, so I rode the trainer and pushed. Gotta eat more! It's hard to do that after not eating enough for so long.

Coffee...mmmmmm. Got the water on the stove and the press ready right now. Won't be long!

I won't repeat my mini-Diablo bonk story, but yes, 30miles in I felt the wrath.

I just ordered me a pack of apple cinnamon hammer gel - I think Lanceoldstrong mentioned this first - yummy. Very nice.

The other thing I've gotta try, Hammer is coming out with a new flavour of perpetuem in Feb ...drum roll...Cafe Latte. Man I gotta get some of that.

Even Coach Troy mentions you should be putting calories into your body while spinning. And if you're watching the Vuelta, you might need to put something else into your system. He surprised me the other night and made me do some squats! Ouch.

I prefer Gu to HammerGel mostly because of the packaging -- Gu's is smaller, for some reason. The chocolate outrage reminds me of cake batter. And recently I bought a couple "Roctane" Gu pkgs: There's a proprietary blend of amino acids in them that the Rock Racing team uses. Both the orange vanilla and blueberry pomegranate flavors are good. Can't tell if the Roctane is doing any good, however.

Thus are the results of my one-rat study.

Gotta eat when you are done with a training ride. The body wants to recover and needs the food to do so. If yer not a eater right after ya get off the bike a good recovery drink or chocolate milk will go a long ways.
