Sunnyvale city council reverses ban on bike paths

This is kind of a weird story. Back in the 1990s, the city of Mountain View started building the Stevens Creek Trail from the SF Bay westwards following the Stevens Creek. The city of Sunnyvale didn't want any of those Mountain View riff raff entering their city, so in 1994 they passed a city law banning bike paths within the city of Sunnyvale. 15 years later, Mountain View is about to complete the Stevens Creek Trail all the way from the bay to their border with Sunnyvale. There was a real danger that the trail could not continue past that point because of the Sunnyvale ban on bike paths. Fortunately, the current Sunnyvale city council saw that the Stevens Creek Trail users were not all degenerates and they passed a new law this week to allow the Stevens Creek Trail to enter the city of Sunnyvale. Thank you to all the Sunnyvale residents (and foreign agitators) who pressured the city council to pass this new law.

Here is a thank you note from Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and the Friends of Stevens Creek (charity foundation):

Unfortunately, this does not mean that the Stevens Creek Trail will quickly be built through the city of Sunnyvale. There is still work to prevent the NIMBYs along the route from blocking the trail.

This is great news. I regularly ride SCT with my girlfriend and it's great riding when you want to avoid cars. Now we can ride further on a great multi use trail.

Remember that this is not a done deal. If you live in Sunnyvale, please contact your city council member and express your support for the Stevens Creek Trail. They still need to approve and fund a route and you can expect some NIMBY residents along the route to be opposed to it.
