Good Bay Area stores for fixed gear bikes?

Eh, not many hills around UC Davis campus, and I've seen a lot of people ride around fixed gear bikes, and I'm interested in picking one up.

So I'm looking for good stores to buy a fixed gear at? Or some place that will sell a good used fixed gear?

The places I've been looking at are

American Cyclery in San Francisco, and Manifesto in Oakland. They both come with recommendations from friends as well as reviews.

I've got a few hundred to spend, but nothing too much as I just splurged my previous paychecks on a Fuji Newest 1.0.

Thanks!

The place you bought the Fuji might have a Fuji Track.

If you're in Davis, there must be something nearby. Or check out The Bicycle Business in Sacramento. I haven't been, but it seems to be the area fixed gear mecca.

I'm thinking about the Dawes SST from BikesDirect.

Been looking on Craigslist, too many of them seem to be a tad pricy for what you're getting, since Fixed-Gear seems to be the fad. I think I want to try building one, or at least pick the components that I want.

But yeah, thanks for that link x136! I'll swing by there next time I'm in Sac.

If you want to build one and can ride a 56cm frame, I have a couple frame sets you can choose from, cheap. Cosmetically challenged but mid-level cro-moly Nishiki's in need of a powder coat.

I like the guys at Pacific Bikes in SF. They have a large selection of Bianchi, Masi, etc SS/Fixies. Although I've heard some people don't care for some of the sales guys. I, myself, hadn't encountered that. They've trued a couple of my wheels I bought elsewhere and repaired a bent Mavic bladed spoke and saved me some $$ instead of buying a new spoke that would have taken a week to get. They only charged me something like $20 to fix and true the wheel.

Although I have never bought a bike there... but my other experiences there have been good.

You can even try, dare I say it, Performance Bike in SF. They have the Schwinn Madison, Fuji, and ?

Good luck!

Not sure if you're still looking of whatnot, but just wanted to say that Manifesto is truly awesome. The owners, Sam and McKay, are super sweet and helpful. I'd definitely recommend them to check out.

Yeah. I was going to actually order off BikesDirect today, but they were sold out.

I'm going to stop by Manifesto, American Cyclery, Valencia, and Montano Velo...

I'm going for a def. budget level, mess around fixie, gonna put my money into the road bike and start prepping for centuries in hopes of doing the Davis Double.

If you're in Davis, check out Natomas Bike Shop off Truxel. They have a few fixed gears, like the Specialized Langster, but they also have a sweet steel framed build up right now. I'm not even in to the fixie scene and I thought the bike was sweet.

Wheelgirl's actually pretty cool, except everthing in the shop is definitely not for those on a budget. Just a head's up.

If you're in Davis, check out Apex Cycles (in Davis). Not much to look at (one-man shop run out of a garage), but the owner (Aaron) is very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Great place to hang out and learn what's what. Decent prices too.

Yeah, I've checked out Apex. Wonderful guy, very very very helpful. But plans had to be put aside as parents won't let me use my job money to buy another bike. Def. gonna go there for everything tho, lol.

I'm totally new here (and new to bikes) but I just had a great experience with the Missing Link Bicycle Cooperative in Berkeley. They aren't an exclusive fixed-gear shop, but I'd say they're worth checking out anyway. I'm so impressed with the abundance of knowledge and helpful people all around the shop (both employees and customers). I'm looking forward to going there again, personally.
