That's even worse than taking the ski lift up for mountain biking!

Quoted for posterity for when the CL listing dies:

Bike Mount Diablo - $50 (walnut creek)

You and a friend get a Ride up to the top of Mt Diablo for a beautiful and serene ride down the Mountain. This ride is approximately 25 Miles round trip. I will pick the two of you up at Oak Grove and Ygnacio Valley Road and drive you up to the summit. Your bikes will be securely strapped into the hitch mounted Thule rack on the back of my Audi Wagon. Hop in and you will be at the top in no time. From there you are on your own to hang out and ride back to your cars at your leisure. A gourmet lunch will be provided if you wish for an additional fee of $15 per lunch. Its a great time. Its the ride down which is awesome and relaxing. Rides up start at 8am.

What are the odds on these downhill cyclists driving their bikes to the corner of Ygnacio and Oak Grove so that they can be driven up by Mr Audi-Station-Wagon-with-Thule-Rack?

Besides, I'd be happy to provide this service for a much more reasonable $49.99

That's a common tourist thing at some of the Pacific volcanoes, has been done at Pikes Peak, etc. Take the tourists up in buses, let 'em coast down at their leisure. It's not a Fred thing, it's a non-cyclist thing.

+1

You got it. It's a legit tourist offering for non-cyclists. I don't think that non-cycling tourists hang out at Craigslist, tho...

Are there MTB trails that go from the summit of Diablo all the way down?

Yes, and they are great!
I have done that with my son several times, both South and North gate road. We climbed the mountain on the road to the top and used the trails on the way down. When going down the north side one of the options is to end the ride through Castle Rock park where you have to cross the same creek about seven or eight times, a lot of fun when there's enough water to hide rocks in the creek bed.

I don't know that I'd call the Diablo descent "serene" or "relaxing". It's fun, but you ain't fallin' asleep, that's for sure.

If the price were more reasonable, or the $50 took you back to the top several times, I'd consider it. Whee!

I'm no lawyer, but my first thought when reading that was "what if someone crashes and gets hurt on the way down, or what if he wrecks the car?"

Eastern Sierra, dormant volcano, 11,000'+ in elevation. It is a world class ski resort in the winter, and a big-time mtb park in the summer. I can't imagine riding up to the top, and nobody really does. You buy an all-day gondola ticket.

Slightly OT. I'd love to do the ski lift thing at North Star this summer. Any other MTB'ers here done North Star?

Heh, rent a 15-passenger Econoline van for the day, end the day with about a hundred feet of climbing, and about 15,000 feet of descending.

Huh, the ticket's only $39, too. Not bad.

And the scenery from the top is unmatched. It's like the top of the world up there. The air is a bit thin, though......
