Off the bike for a bit ! :(

Hi gang-

I was in a pretty bad accident (solo-duh!) near the end of my DR training ride last Saturday (Olema-Pt Reyes Lighthouse-Mt Vision - Olema) and I was helicoptered to the hospital in Santa Rosa. I remember neither the accident nor the heli ride nor much of Saturday or Sunday. I got out of the ICU on Mon or maybe it was Tues, and I got home yesterday. I'm still pretty well banged up -- seeing double, lots of road rash, compressed T7 vertebra (and a cool vest-like cast to wear when I'm upright, which ain't much), and a very sore right shoulder. Seeing the local Drs tomorrow. Apart from that I'm fine. :D

The new Lynskey fared OK (it was a champ  until then) it might need a new derraileur -- and my Bell Furio helmet did what it's supposed to do (so it's destroyed), but so it goes.

No riding for a month or so, nothing strenuous for couple of mos at least, so no Death Ride for moi. Coulda been worse. :)

I'll update my blog eventually -- just this post took me a lot of time, which I have in spades right now. :)

See y'all on the roads eventually!

-Jo.

Glad you're still around, and it sounds like you'll make a great recovery. Take care of yourself and follow the doc's orders.

jinws 04-02-09 05:58 PM

Heal up soon!

uspspro 04-02-09 06:06 PM

Ouch! Sorry to hear!

What happened?

jonathanb715 04-02-09 06:09 PM

Hey, JoBob,

Glad you're on the mend - you gave everyone quite a scare! As noted elsewhere, there are easier ways to get a helicopter ride.

Jo:

So sorry to hear about this! Here's hoping you heal up quickly and completely!

PS: I got my helicopter ride to the ICU two years ago. C5 vertebra for me.

You're one tough cookie Jo!

Hang in there.

Veronica

If you really didn't want to go on the Slowpoke Ride, you caould've just said so. I mean, we would have been okay with it. Really.

Very sorry to hear about your crash, but I'm glad to hear you'll recover. All of us in "Slowpoke Land" hope to see you as soon as your body permits.

BlastRadius 04-02-09 06:22 PM

Heal well Jo. Sounds like a scary few days.

LOL, I have absolutely no freakin' idea ! :o The only person wo saw it happen was driving nearby (no she did not hit me) so she couldn't help me w details. She is a first year med student though, and was able to give me very prelim care before the others and the ambulance arrived. I was in Pt Reyes State Park and they did well by me.

From what I've been able to glean from others, I was on a short downhill and I went over the h-bars. It was bumpy & potholey around there so maybe I just hit one wrong. Good helmet, may it rest in piece.

Get well soon!

alainp 04-02-09 06:39 PM

So sorry to hear of your mishap. Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery.

cccorlew 04-02-09 06:40 PM

Ohhhh. I too know what it's like to go through recovering from a crash.
I'm wishing you well, and hoping for a speedy -- and pain free (as much as possible) -- recovery.

1jacktripper 04-02-09 07:46 PM

Speedy recovery! Glad to see that you are of high spirits.

msincredible 04-02-09 07:48 PM

Sorry Jo, hope you heal up quickly. Please let us know if you need anything.

Beaker 04-02-09 07:56 PM

Glad you're on the mend. Good luck with a swift recovery.

x136 04-02-09 08:21 PM

Holy crap!

Heal up quickly (and correctly!), Jo. Glad it wasn't any worse than it was. http://www.bikeforums.net/mysmiliesvb/mysmilie_15.gif

scottmorrison99 04-02-09 09:17 PM

Wow. I'm glad you're not worse off.

spingineer 04-02-09 09:55 PM

So sorry to hear, Jo. We were actually leaving Pt. Reyes, southbound on Hwy 1, and saw a couple of speeding CHP's going in the reverse direction. They were probably racing to attend to you. Heal up. The roads will be waiting for you ... and so will we. :)

overthere 04-02-09 10:01 PM

Scary!! Goodness me, too many crashes already~ :(. Take care of yourself, and hope your recovery goes by smoothly and quickly!

Lanceoldstrong 04-02-09 10:24 PM

+1,000,000,000 on feel better and glad you were not more seriously hurt.

Red Rider 04-02-09 10:38 PM

Yikes!:eek::eek:

So glad you're okay. And as one accident-bad-enough-to-keep-me-off-the-bike-cyclist to another, take whatever time you need to heal. There's no rushing progress.

I just read your post to my husband (cgallagh). He said "Holy *****!" and is also glad you're still with us.

Sending gentle hugs...

hs845 04-02-09 11:23 PM

Good to hear you're home and OK.
Hope the mending is uneventful.
Don't rush. The roads will still be around when you're better.

gpelpel 04-02-09 11:27 PM

Glad your are on the path to good recovery.
Hope to see you on the bike soon.
