APRIL Challenge

Here's the deal. Ride for an hour. How far can you get from your starting place in the hour, as the crow flies? So if you travel 20 miles, but it's all winding, you may end up 10 miles away as the crow flies.

Proof on a map.

Post your results here. There are no prizes for the winner

Excellent idea Joel. I've been thinking about how to get a flatter ride to get some miles in my backside over the next two weeks. This'll be a good challenge, all my regular routes have climbs that would ruin this!

Just fly one of the new Airbus superjumbo equipped with a gym. A stationery bike will be enough to keep your winning streak alive.

A dead straight flat road with a tailwind would probably win, but a long, relatively straight descent is another possibility.

Clarification: Is this the same "Start at your house or within a half mile" as the last one, or "start anywhere"?

Pick your own starting place. Next time we'll do a start at your home.

San Pablo Dam road seems like the easiest way to win this one.

Well, if you give away the best road, this is just going to turn into a friggin' time trial.

Very cool idea. I have some devious plans for this one.

How do you measure the distance between two points? I think my GPS will do it if I mark the start point, but I'm not sure how others are supposed to measure this.

You can import a GPX file into Google Earth, which has a ruler tool.

You can also use https://gmap-pedometer.com/ or https://bikely.com/ and turn off the "follow roads" option.

ps, this looks like a fun challenge that could be won or lost by selecting the optimal road rather than being a fast rider

I've got some good ideas, but none of the roads are straight for more than 16.5 miles

After 16.5 miles, I'd have to take a 90 degree corner, which would screw with my as the crow flies distance.

AND are we talking rolling time or total ride time? A long straight road with a lot of lights and stop signs might not be as great as a curvy road...

From today's ride. Amazing that I rode 18 miles on the route, but it came to 11.85. This was the straightest stretch from today's ride.

My first attempt from today's ride: https://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...,0.307617&z=12

Need to compute the linear distance for the "as the bird flies" figure.

16.3 miles ridden, but only 11.2 miles as the bird flies. Weak sauce. That said, this did include about 700 feet of climbing (albeit a lot more descending). I think there may be better routes...

That seems like a good thing! Assuming you can find a nice flat road aligned with the wind

Yesterday's ride of 36.18 mi. I only got 9.87 miles away from home crowflying... Hmmm.

Averaged 19.2mph with wind though... Heh heh!

Meet tomorrow at Westley on I-5. Winds should be blowing south at about 35mph. Should be able to keep up with traffic. Might even make it past Santa Nella
