I started the Cat 5 race today, and was pulled after 5 laps. This was my first ever race. Not the best race for a newbie you ask? You bet...tight turns, wicked pavement seams, the left turn onto the massive 23% grade, then a downhill into a 90-turn where the pavement looks like another Loma Prieta just hit, and where the parked ambulance ominously awaits business. Add some slickness from the showers and I was counting each lap remaining upright as another victory. Around four of us were behind the main group, one suggested we work together. I told him that he didn't want to be anywhere near me. I should have had a sign: "First Race---Stay Away".
Now I know that I can enter any race, and it will not be so hairy as my 5 laps of Cat's Hill.

Ritterview, congrats on surviving your 1st Cat 5 race.
Yeah, Cats Hill is about as tough as it gets for a 1st race. It definitely gets easier.

I got to the race like 10 min before the start. I Overslept my alarm.
I got zero warm up and got to the line like 2 min before the start.
Maybe it was DMD the week before, or having no warmup, a little sick, or a combo of the three, but I just didn't have it.
The first lap was fast right away, and I was caught of guard a bit. One guy cut me off in the first turn (didn't hold his line) and I didn't sprint hard to get back on. I was just not aggressive enough at all. So I lost the pack right away. At that point it was just too late.
Too bad, because I caught and passed people on the hill every lap. I felt great on the hill, and I felt better in the later laps, and was catching the field. But the marshall pulled me and a few others off
Got a couple good pics of me on the hill though.
Eh, whatever just wasn't meant to be. You really need a FULL warmup for something like this. Especially cat5 with it's 10 lap short race.

Did your lovely stoker take those shots? Nice pics, however the The 800-TOILETS sign right under your saddle isn't the most complementary.
All my shots at Turn 2 in the afternoon have a prominent outhouse background.
Do you have more pics? None of the other Cat's Hill compilations have the Cat 5 race.

Gee, some nice shots of you uspspro. I just got this one, with me in the background in the white sleeves. I think my image is blurred because I was going up the hill so fast.

heh. Sorry Ritterview. If I'd known that was you I'd have tried to grab more shots. Nowadays there are so many people shooting bike races that I usually just focus on teammates (Alto Velo), friends, other people I know and/or recognize. I'll look for you at other races...you doing Pescadero?

Yeah, I was in the Cat5 race...for about 1 lap.
I broke my right cleat during warm ups . Then couldn't clip in at the start and had to ride the hill extra careful not to pull out. Couldn't get any power down on the pedals, so I dropped out after lap 1, OTB anyways. Really sucks, I liked the course and think I could have been pretty fast. 0 for 3 in the last two weeks, hope my luck turns around soon, or I might end up upgrading to 4s without having a finish LOL...

However the BB30 Caad9 is now available to the public. There is a part number for it if you search on weight weenies. Just go to your LBS and tell them to order that frameset using the part number.
