Route from Dumbarton to San Leandro (Washington St)?
 

Hey,

I'm entertaining the idea to ride over to visit a friend in the East Bay on Sat. I"m in Mtn View. I can get myself over the Dumbarton and I could follow the main streets like Hesperian to get to San Leandro but I was wondering if there's a better, less traffic, safer, prettier (or at least quieter) route than the main drag?

Can someone on the other side of bay offer a better route than Google's walking route?

What about getting to a BART station on the west bay and taking BART to San Leandro?

I can't be of great help; but my Dad used to live in San Leandro nearer to the bay in the marina area. There's a pretty good bayfront trail linking some of the parks and the marina.
That might help a little.

I can get you to Hesperian, from there you'll need some good alternates:

Dumbarton to the Frontage Road
Left on Thornton --> turns into Paseo Padre
Left on Ardenwood -- turns into Union City Blvd.

All of these streets should have a bike lane/shoulder.
After you get to the intersection of Hesperian/Tripaldi it gets a little dicey.

No bike lane or shoulder on Union City Blvd from the Alameda Creek overpass to the north side of Union City, as you get near Kaiser.
The Bay Trail would be unpaved for most of the way.
I've been researching this route to ride to Alameda, and there is not a decent way around using Hesperian for quite a ways. Hesperian has no bike lane, so you'd be taking the right lane, as it's too narrow to share.

Yes, I used to commute this way, and the drivers there definitely do not appreciate you taking the right lane. I was often the only bike on the road. :rolleyes:

+1 about Hesparian / UC Blvd

However, if you ride it early enough, there aren't too many cars. I rode from San Leandro to Coyote Hills via Hesparian one Saturday morning to meet up some friends and it wasn't too bad at all. This was around 8AM. Otherwise, it is a pretty busy street.

Hey thanks everyone. Just what I needed. I can obviously create a route from looking at the map but I just don't know enough about the area to know where the safer, low traffic, etc areas might be or if there was a more preferable, bike friendly route than Hesperian.

What part of San Leandro are you going to? Which side of 880?
