Maltodextrin, where to buy?
Hi.
Any suggestions where I can buy Maltodextrin in Bay Area? I want to start making my own recovery drinks/foods. Thanks UD |
Brown rice syrup is similar and you can find it in Whole Foods and health food stores. Not sure about maltodextrin but I've never looked for it.
Here's an online source: http://www.nutritiongeeks.com/carbo-...xtrin-now.html |
Arnie Baker lists a couple of sources at the bottom of this handout.
I think these wholesalers will only sell 50 lb. bags, though - probably enough for a few years! JB |
I never found a local place to buy it, so I order in online from here:
http://www.bulkfoods.com/search_resu...rch=fromSearch They have 1 lb, 5 lb, & 25 lb bags. |
I use the stuff on every ride. I buy it by the 50 pound bag. I get it here (50 pounds for $52). I think shipping was only a couple dollars. Sounded too good to be true but I've ordered from them twice now and am very happy with them (gyad... do I really use that much?)

1 Maltodextrin 50 LB $52.99 Subtotal $52.99 Shipping $4.49 Tax $0.00 Total $57.48 $4.49 shipping on FIFTY POUNDS??? How the heck can they do that? I just tried adding a few more bags to the order; It is a flat rate of $4.49 for any order! |
I would check also local natural food type stores and home brew supply stores.

For storing those 50 pound orders Home Depot sells these orange five gallon buckets with lids that make perfect storage containers. Two of them hold 50 pounds quite nicely.

Thanks for replies. I ordered it online, 1pound just to try it. I will definitely keep brown rice syrup in mind. Although I haven't seen it in Whole Foods around Santa Clara. Then again I wasn't looking for it.

Info about food grade plastics: http://www.virtualweberbullet.com/plastics.html I have found brown rice syrup at Food Hole. Next to the maple syrup. Its way more expensive than $1/lb though- more like $50/gallon in bulk. |

You can also get food grade 5 gal buckets.
However it also states: Not All HDPE Containers Are Food Grade There is a common misconception that all containers made of white plastic or HDPE plastic bearing the http://www.virtualweberbullet.com/pl.../2-hdpe_sm.gif symbol are food grade containers. This is not true. If you are considering the purchase of a container from some place other than a kitchen or restaurant supply store, and the container is not clearly labeled as "food safe" or being made of food grade plastic... |

This is what I use:
Now Sports/ Carbo Gain http://www.shop.healthesupplements.c...511723696.jpeg 100% maltodextrin, from corn, complex carbs. 50 grams per serving, mix it with a fruit smoothie, and preferred protein powder; and makes a perfect 4:1 carbs/protein shake, with 50/50 complex/simple carbs. Pretty easy and cheap to find online. be sure to atleast get the 7 or 12 lbs. size if interested. |
That is what I ended up ordering.

I ended up finding a place that lets you make a "custom" mix (trueprotein.com). I made a mix with the following ingredients/ratios:
75% Maltodextrin 5% Dextrose 20% egg white protein Then, I added lemon-lime flavoring (unsweetened) and electrolytes. About $4.50/lb, but with shipping and tax it came to $21.50 for 2 lbs delivered. I tried it today, and it seems ok. I only did 40 miles, but it is HOT out. Tastes just like Gatorade, but is a little on the sweet side. I used 2 measures per bottle so maybe too much.... or else I need to cut back on the Dextrose on the next order. |
I mix it with non-fat yogurt, unsweetened cocoa and few packets of stevia to have as a recovery "drink".

Thanks for the link. As a vegan finding good supplements is hard. You literally ended what I thought was going to be a life long search for good vegan friendly supplements.

You're welcome. Not only that, but they're located in Oceanside - that's down somewhere by you, no?
