Larry Ellison to sponsor Lance Armstrong next year?

Speaking of Woodside, there is a rumor going around that Woodside's most famous resident is going to be sponsoring Lance Armstrong next year. No idea if he is co-sponsoring the Astana team or a new team. Formal announcement may come on Thursday.

Here is a teaser (or maybe a hoax): http://oraclecycling.com/

Hmmm

Anything is possible.

No more Astana for Bruyneel and Armstrong hinting on his twitter page...who knows.

If some hack that sells jeans can put together a cycling team, I suppose Ellison could put up a heck of a team. Though, I have to wonder what will happen when things don't go his way?

I'm not so sure 22.5 billion goes as far as it used to. All those carbon wheels add up.

It seems more than a rumor. LA had hinted several times that he was in very deep talks with a US potential sponsor and news that Bruyneel is out of Astana at the end of the season makes it even more probable.
Astana will be rebuilt around Vinokourov while Bruyneel will manage the new US based team that will include LA, Leipheimer, and probably Horner among others. The big question is where Contador will sign with. If the big Astana clash of titans was just a smokescreen he could do worse than signing along this new team. Rumors has it that he will sign with Caisse d'Epargne though.

I think Contador will go with a Spanish team. If Lance goes with a new U.S. sponsored team, you know he'll be the designated star and Contador would be best supporting actor. I'm just kind of shocked and impressed that Lance is already looking forward to another TDF effort in 2010. If I was him, I'd be practicing my lines for Dodgeball 2.

Screaming red and white jerseys that with Oracle across the back and red and white Team Oracle edition Trek Madones. Hmm. I could get behind this.

The part of me that does DBA work is all for it! Definitely need a team Oracle jersey to go with my old Sun one.

I couldn't. I'm a former Oracle, and PeopleSoft, employee and despise Uncle Larry with a passion.

LOL....You must really be a former PeopleSoft employee (Oracle through acquisition) with the "Uncle" reference. . Uncle Dave yes, Uncle Larry no.

I could see Oracle in the mix...not necessarily because Larry is a cycling fan, but because of the cancer fighting side of the equation.

Larry is a big sports fan. He has been involved in boat racing for years. He has also tried to buy the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers.

True, especially the yacht racing, but I never heard him talk about cycling, whereas the Cup and other sports topics came up randomly during meetings I attended - most of which were during Lance's first few tour victories . Not to say Larry isn't a cycling fan, but I think the cancer fighting ties would be a much stronger pull for him.

Ding ding ding!

Actually I worked for Oracle, during the boom, then left them for a startup. Went to PSFT, got acquired by ORCL, worked for them for a while and then got laid off.

I'll never work for the big "O" again.

Source: Lance's team lands sponsor

Radio Shack will be the primary sponsor for Lance Armstrong and Johan Bruyneel's new cycling team, an industry source told ESPN.com's Bonnie D. Ford on Thursday.

The Web site domain teamradioshack.com was registered by Capital Sports & Entertainment, Armstrong's longtime management company based in Austin, Texas, on July 20.

Armstrong's spokesman would not confirm or deny the information, but an official announcement was expected later Thursday.

Radio Shack has been involved in NBA and MLS sponsorships and is currently a NASCAR sponsor.

Bonnie D. Ford covers cycling for ESPN.com.

I doubt Radio Shack will be the primary sponsor. Could be wrong, but just can't see it. More likely they would be a secondary sponsor.

EDIT: I guess I was wrong. Radio Shack...Ugh

That's what all of the Sun employees who used to work for Oracle said minutes before Oracle ate Sun up like a cheeseburger. Odds are that Oracle will buy you up again!

All I'm asking for is a non-embarassing kit for Team Radio Shack. I don't really care how the team does. I just want them to look good.

They can't. The executive responsible for this decision will leave after 1 or 2 years and a new primary sponsor will be needed.

Hopefully, I'm wrong, but I'm cynical about longtime commitments to a team - especially if Lance doesn't stick around.
