Selling bike via Craiglsit in San Jose

I have never used Craiglist before and I am a little skeptical about it. Since I am moving, so I have to sell my bike. Is it generally safe selling on Craiglist in this area? Has anyone done so?

I recently had good luck selling to a young racer in Nigeria. Apparently good bikes are hard to find over there. He covered shipping and actually paid me more than my asking price! It was a real win-win situation.

BTW, just to avoid any confusion, I was totally joking. Google "Nigeria scam" if you haven't heard of this.

I have bought and sold bikes on CL with no problems. I just sold my classic 80s Trek to a guy in my neighborhood and hopefully we will do some rides together as well. Just use common sense.

I buy and sell stuff all the time. I can usually tell by the initial email exchange if they are serious, flaky, or legit.

Cash only, meet at BART or a Starbucks somewhere.

I've bought and sold a lot on CL, with never a problem...... other than a flake or three that never showed.

You also might try the classifieds at the Serotta.com discussion forum. Free to join, and stuff moves on that list.

I have bought three cars and sold four on craigslist. Like others have said, meet at public places and cash only for low dollar items. With my car sales, most were cashiers checks and I don't release the title until the check clears. I sold a truck and accepted $18k in cash BUT the buyer went with me to my bank.

CL worked well for us...have bought and sold cars and two Tandems on it. Do as many have suggested....cash only and do the deal in a public place...just use common sense and trust your instincts.
Good luck and go for it.

Don't let anyone test ride without cash in hand or at least some sort of real collateral.

I sold a Kestrel on there this spring. I had to renew the ad a couple of times, but eventually got what I was asking for it. Definitely cash only! The advice about meeting in a public place is good. I never felt the need to bring a friend when selling stuff.

They are Williams 58mm tubulars with new Conti tubulars. That sounds strange. As mentioned earlier I used em in a few races and that was it. Very few miles on em.

Just to backup the advice that everyone else gave, Craigslist is generally safe and convenient as long as you know what you're doing. I have bought and sold plenty of bikes through the site with no problem. As previously mentioned, always meet in a public place and if possible bring someone else with you as well.

I'm going to sell a car on craigslist. I'm looking for helpful tips.
Cash? (It will be almost 10K)
test drive safety?

Pointers to hints on the web?

Suggestion: rather than (or in addition to) searching for tips, search for scams, thefts, and problems - people tend to write more about bad experiences than good ones. Then, make your own plans accordingly.

I've bought / sold bikes, parts, televisions, and all sorts of random things off CL. Like many have said, you can usually tell through the email if it might be sketch, and when you meet try and meet in public areas (I have a preferred Peet's for CL meets) and only accept cash. I haven't ever held a license when selling a bike, but that's because all my bikes aren't more than 200 bucks. When I sell my roadie in a month, I will ask for collateral.

Just be patient, sometimes it takes a while to get the amount that you're asking, but eventually you will, though it may take 2-3 reposts.
