Mt. Umunhum public access

Mt. Umunhum is the 3500 foot mountain in the south bay with the big white box on top. The mid-pen open space district now owns the summit and access road and would like to open them to the public. They are asking for public comment on 3 different plans.

Read their plans, fill out their survey, and send your comments here: https://www.openspace.org/plans_projects/mt_umunhum.asp

Note that "Theme A" allows bicycle access 7 days/week, but car access only on weekends.

I grew up in the Almaden and have ridden up this road more than a few times and think it will be great if it is opened to the public. I will ready and give input.

I remember in 1982 actually going onto the closed base to get water and was met by a civilian carrying an M-16 rifle. He was not amused with us for coming onto the base, but was nice and told us to leave. He did not let us get water. However, it was fun descending back to Hicks Rd from the top.

i like the options that don't include demolition of the radar tower. save the cube!

option c keeps the radar tower and includes potable water so i guess my vote would go there.
but in a selfish way i sort of like the part of option a that keeps cars off there on weekdays.

Once restored they should have a bike race up the mountain like Mount Diablo to raise funds. I hope they save the cube too. They should also charge cars for going up/parking.

I voted for C as well, due to the water. I don't see cars being an issue, unless it becomes a popular destination for some reason.

I think they really need to keep the tower for history.
I'd probably be for C from what I've seen.

When I was in high school, we used to go up in the area to do a bit of shooting and hunting. I remember it was always a good day when we found stolen cars pushed off the road that still had intact windows to shoot out with our shotguns. Fun times!

I know it's already happened, but isn't Los Altos a bit far from Mt U?
I realize it's the district office, bu they should have an open house much closer to the actual property.
