From Sausalito Across the Golden Gate - What the Safest Route??

Hi There

A few of us are planning on going to Fleetweek this Saturday in San Francisco as we don't want to drive into the city instead we would like to park in Marin County side and bike into the city across the Golden Gate. I know before we have parked in the parking on the west side of north end of the bridge and rode across. But this time we would like to be in downtown Sausalito and ride up to the Gate. What would be the best route with little traffic going up to the bike path on the west side of the bridge? Anyone that could help us plan this out would be very appreciated.

Thanks

From downtown take the main road Bridgeway Blvd south, it becomes Richardson St heading west, then 2nd St heading south, then South St. heading east, and then Alexander heading south again. It is basically the same road that changes names at each turn and the main access to the bridge from Sausalito so it has quite a lot of traffic. Before going up toward to the bridge you also have the option to take quiet East Rd. along the coast. East Rd. brings you into the old military base, it becomes Murray Circle. At the end of Murray turn left along the shore on Conzelman. At the end of Conzelman there's a paved trail going under the bridge and up to the west parking lot where the bike path to cross the bridge starts.

It's been some time since I've ridden that route, so hopefully someone with fresher data will chime in.. but AFAIK there's really only the Alexander Avenue route up from downtown Sausalito to the bridge. The route is highlighted in yellow on Google Maps. Start from Bridgeway and head south; when you get to a hill, start climbing. Alexander Ave has good, wide shoulders and lots of bicycle traffic. The vehicles are moving at speed but it's not especially challenging for novice cyclists - apart from the hill ;-) The only part I didn't like was the narrow tunnel that passes under 101 just at the northern approach to the bridge, but that's only about 20 yards of riding.

Years ago you could ride under the foot of the bridge and wind through the old military installation, but I think that route closed in 1999 or so. Anybody know if it has re-opened? Edit: gpelpel says it is open. That's the quieter route, for certain.

Watching the Blue Angels from the bridge is a great spot - I still vividly remember being able to see the pilot's helmet as he crossed over us about 150 feet off the deck.

Yes, to avoid traffic you can make the right turn onto East Rd. that takes you to the Fort Baker area and then continue on Conzelman (which is closed to cars once you cross under the bridge and start to climb) up to the west side of the bridge. That way you're only on the busy part of Alexander for a short distance. But you do have to do a little more climbing on this route than if you stay on the main road up to the bridge path.

I thought the route under the bridge was closed. Can some confirm this?

Closed to cars, not to bikes unless something changed recently.

I thought the road was closed too, but Google Street View shows that the auto road ends with a security barrier, and the bicycle access continues to the left.

Rest assured that even if you forget everything that has been posted here, it'd be pretty much impossible to find yourself in Sausalito and not find your way on to the Golden Gate Bridge on a weekend 'cause there is so much bike traffic heading that way. Just follow along with everybody else!
