Hey gang- I am stoked about the ride! I haven't taken a formal roll call, but it sounds like we will have a great turnout! I recommend that we ride together to the base of the mountain (near the entrance station) and then people can proceed up in smaller groups based on preferred pace and how much they are drinking tonight.

See you all at 9 sharp tomorrow at Pleasant Hill! Ho ho ho!!!

Thanks for the ride Justin.
Sorry I had to bail out before all arrived to the top. I was in a hurry to get back home. Rich and I took South Gate back to Lafayette and Orinda.
Merry Christmas to all!

Merry Christmas!

Great ride everyone! Fantastic turnout, lots of good people, new and old. The weather was perfect and the views were spectacular. What a great way to spend Christmas Eve morning. Sorry I didn't catch everyone's name and had to head down before everyone made it to the top. I really enjoyed the day and hope this becomes an annual BF tradition!

A few of us at the top...

Merry Christmas to all and here's to all the best in 2011!

So thaaaat's what the top looks like...

Hope you guys weren't waiting around too long up there. I was pretty much toast by the junction, but soldiered on pathetically , hoping y'all'd give up and head back down.

That said, I had a good time. Thanks for setting it all up!

Thanks for suggesting the ride Justin. Had a good time - made a reasonable effort up to the junction and then enjoyed a rare, "leisurely" ride up Summit Rd - keeping my HR low kinda worked. Beautiful day today, and it was nice to swoop down SGR with Georges and end up with 47.5miles for the day. Good to see so many folks, next time hopefully we'll have more time to chit-chat between leaving the MUP and starting a climb.

Oh, everyone else saw Jesus walking up Northgate on the way down, right? Bearded guy, looked kind of high, walking along the center line of the road, barefoot?

1975 summer vs 2010 Christmas Eve by ccorlew, on Flickr

I had a good time, though I felt awful in the morning and on the way up. Sometimes HTFU is just doing it at all.

One of the reasons I wanted to make it to the the top was that I'd been given the task of recreating the photo of my first ride up. So I did.

Wha...whe...wait..huh? Kinda bummed I took SGR now. Having said that I could understand seeing Jesus during an ascent of North Gate, but that's different.

Very nicely done! Of course, it would be highly interesting and relevant to this thread to post the bicycle and rider weights in the before and after pics.

Gotta do it over. Wear short denim shorts, longer socks, and a t-shirt this time.

Inaccuracies aside, that's really cool.

MyLilPony said "Did I really see that?" on the way down.
Yep, walking exactly up the middle of the road, with a total "I own this" smirk, was Jesus. Perhaps a day early.

Rider weight: My guess is about the same, but somewhat redistributed. Certainly within 7 pounds.
Bike weight: more than 30 vs 18ish. That's a gen-u-ine Gitane Grand Sport Deluxe with steel (non-alloy) wheels and a plastic saddle.
Gears: 42-26 in 75, 30-28 in 2010. I remember I had to pretty much stand the whole way back then.

X136, that's my high school PE shirt... Yikes.

On the one hand, I'm surprised you were able to lift it over your head, but on the other, successfully dragging it up the mountain makes the pose oh so worthwhile.

And with steel rims, you were squeezing the brake levers for dear life, hoping very hard to not meet Diablo Jesus™ the hard way!

Having ridden up South Gate exclusively I was not expecting the unpleasantness of the North Gate climb - then ascending to the top! I wanted to bail at Junction, but kept going. Then when the dude on the mountain bike passed me I knew I was done - but I soldiered on up and finally arrived. Good idea Justin - BF tradition? I'll need the year to think about doing NG again.

The Horror....

That's not Billy Jean King, that's John Denver, so I only needed half a change.

Diablo Scott says there are two ways up Diablo, Northgate Rd and the easy way.
Welcome to the Northside. Good job!

Hey Roja, Thanks for the early Christmas gift, getting the merry band together for us to see each other on a special day was really a treat.

Oh and I did see Jesus barefootin' it up the mountain, I thought he was there to smite me for a certain joke I told at the summit.

Justin...Main instigator.

Dan freezing His A off but basking in the glory of his 2010 conquerings.

Curtis; shedding the Billy Jean..err John Denver stigma...Laughing at the puny wall He just leveled.

George...Anticipating the cold climb

Tricia/Curtis..." Christmas Eve accomplishment; finished"

Richard snickering about His Christmas gift He was about to deliver to the crew...

Chris and Deb enjoying some together time and looking good.

I was embarrassed that I didn't recognize this guy at first and introduced myself to Him and He non-plussed said "Hey I'm Alex"...Oops...Didn't realize He had turned pro!

Lot's of new faces in Christmas Red!

I'm bummed that I couldn't go, but we had to drive on up to Sonoma for the day.

What's up with all the "stone" kits? Are some of you guys on a team?

Redrider and Cgallagh brought their "Precision Stone" teammates in their brand new bad ass kits.
I tried to hang with the team's elite climbers. That lasted about 30 seconds.
Then I tried to stay with the teams 2nd tier climbers, that lasted another 30 seconds. Sheesh!
As usual I ended up in no mans land.

As Beaker says: Too fast to be considered slow, too slow to be called fast.

We saw Jesus too, but I thought he was a Zen whack-job. How he avoided getting hit by the cars coming uphill -- divine intervention? Whatever. But crazy, bare-feet and all.
