Moving to the San Mateo area...
Are there any places to avoid when looking for a place to live? Good places to road ride in the area? Any assistance is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Avoid East Palo Alto. Good places to road ride? Are you kidding? The riding here is terrible! Better just stay in SLC.

San Mateo County or City? There are no areas in San Mateo City that are to be avoided, IMHO. And certainly some very desirable areas.
As for riding? It's in the middle of cycling heaven. Take your pick....

I'm sure that if you could give some more background it would help - rent/buy? Schools important to you? How much are you looking to spend?

We've lived in San Mateo (city) for the last seven years and about 20 years in the area.
Not sure what you are looking for in the way of housing, but the neighborhoods become more single family, larger houses and lots as you move west from the Bay. Smaller homes, apartments and condos are closer to El Camino, Caltrain and east towards the Bay. We live close to the downtown area and easily walk to shops, restaurants, movies, etc.
For cycling, a ride out Crystal Springs and Polhemus roads takes you to Canada road. From there you have access to the entire peninsula including climbs to the Santa Cruz Mountains (Kings Mountain, Old La Honda, Page Mill, Highway 9 etc) and rides to the coast. Many ways to do 1, 2, 3, 4 and 4+ hour loops with anywhere from 1,000 to 6,000 ft or more of climbing. Search on Strava or Garmin Connect to see tracks from a bunch of the local riders.
Happy to answer any specific questions.

Sorry, more info would certainly help. Looking to rent. No kids, so schools are not a priority. Looking to spend around $2500, and would really like a house or townhouse with a garage. Are house rentals common in the area? Craigslist has a lot of apts, but few houses fir rent. Looking to stay in San Mateo county for a year or so to feel out the area.
Now that you mention walking to shops/restaurants, that sounds really nice. I will have to travel for my new job, so a safe neighborhood where my my wife will feel fairly safe would be a bonus!
