So I was in downtown Pittsburg today.

They did a lot of renovation in the area. I haven't been there for a loooong time, probably since December. New Mecca, an old fixture for many many years, had moved into a larger, more modern location right next door.

Vidrio, the huge complex project that was abandoned, actually opened up and has a few cute little shops including a nice bookstore. Lots of restaurants too.

But what really caught my eye was a new bike shop called Bay Area Bikes. I just HAD to stop in. I met a guy named Clay who owns the place with his wife. He said they have been open for about 3 months in this location. He's a very down to Earth guy and his idea is that he wants people to be exposed to the joys of cycling, the health benefits and hopefully to start commuting more. In chatting with him, I found out that he owns another shop in Oakland and does bike rentals as well. He does have group rides that are geared more toward beginners.

I told him about this forum so hopefully he will join in and say hello. Here's what the store looks like.

In the meantime, if you are ever in the area, stop by and see the new and improved downtown Pittsburg. I was very impressed. That safe hometown feeling is what I got from the area. Very clean, updated but retro. The sidewalks and streets have been redone, brick is used to accent and they planted nice palm trees and are using the old style lamps for street lighting. No more signs of drugs and seedy dealings.

Good on you, Pittsburg for really cleaning the place up. I wish well in your new life.

It's really nice. If you meet Clay tell him you're from BikeForums! But you really are going to be surprised of how much it's changed. Total turnaround. I'll be back for sure. And more often.

You should visit other parts of the Bay Area... and warn us so we know you're coming first.

They had a huge crit there a month or two ago. I shot the women's race, and it was amazing.

The owner of the shop told me that he was involved in sponsoring that. Pretty cool.

This was so local for me there was info all over. I think I first saw it as an ad on Facebook. Or maybe it was in the city of Pittsburg newsletter I saw at Los Medanos College.

A good place to start is www.ncnca.org and check out the monthly "road" calendar

So what do you think about the changes there? I was really surprised and actually feel bad because I avoided going there it was that awful.
