2011 Foxy's Fall Century

Alright, NorCal, who's doing it this year?

https://www.davisbikeclub.org/annual_...s_fall_century

I'm only up for the metric for 2011, since my wife has decided this will be her first attempt at a "long distance" ride, and I said I'd do it with her.

I'd go if I could score two tickets to this sold-out event.

I'll be volunteering once again. "Rolling" SAG on the 100 mile course. Best volunteer gig ever.

I'm starting to get a bit nervous now because we're going to make the long drive north hoping to get one of those '200 day of' entries as well....am I kidding myself and are we likely to get blown out on getting to ride? how has this gone done in previous years for others?

Show up early (6-630) and you will be fine. I've never heard of a person turned away. 200 is a lot of people

Gack, three competing events on the same weekend; this, the SLO GF, and visiting the kid @ school (unfortunately not UCD)...what to do? Well, visiting the kid won out. Have a great ride everyone, this one's always a winner (especially if the winds behave themselves).

c_gallagh and I were going to do this on the tandem but with his newly-repaired clavicle the only bike he'll be riding for a while will be on the trainer. Have fun -- weather should be brilliant!

If by "Rolling" SAG you mean rolling on a bike, that is the same thing I did back when I lived in Davis. In fact, I may have been the first person to ever do the rolling sag gig at FF, back in '84. I rode out a little late, helped a few folks along the way and then settled in to work a late rest stop. After a few large groups of tired riders took off from our stop, several of us saddled up and pulled them in. It was great fun to lead a train of eighty riders for twenty-odd miles. These days I'd be one of the riders being pulled in.

Sorry to hear that. I hope he heals up fast!

I'm going - my first Century ride

I've done 86 (last weekend) so as long as Cardiac Hill doesn't kill me - it should be quite doable!
It's going to be a bit chilly given the weather lately, maybe I should get some arm and leg wraps?

Inspired by promises of same-day-sign up posted here, I booked a hotel room for MyLilPony and I. So I better be able to get a ticket!
In the style of Taxi777, I'm now pondering which jersey to wear. My old Foxy's Fall? My NorCal? I've become to slow to want to wear the triple crown. Maybe the Campbell's FULL OF BEANS would be best....

My girlfriends and I rode from Vacaville to Fairfield, up Mt. George then back along 121 to 128, to Pleasant's Valley Rd. and back to the start -- we didn't stop at any rest stops, just wanted to ride & see lots of cyclists on our roads. We saw lots of local folks but no BF people -- hope you all made it and had a blast. The weather could hardly have been better.

Wife and I rode the 100K on the tandem despite having done the Century the prior two years: darn work travel is cutting into our riding. Weather was great, but warming a bit when we finished at noon. Lasagna at the finish really hit the spot. We enjoyed the ride, but the 100 mi. course is much more interesting despite having to do the climbing. We love downhills on the tandem and there isn't much to offer on the flatish 100K.

The first time we did this on the tandem we hit 52 mph cruising down Cardiac toward Markley Cove. I had to use my Lamaze breathing to survive it, I was so scared, and excited.

Did you pass a 4-woman paceline headed south on Pleasant's Valley Rd. as you headed north? We saw a couple tandems and I didn't recognize them. They may have not been riding Foxy's either.

We're generally on the other end of the pass/get passed equation regarding pacelines and relative youth-ridden singles (anyone under 50). If you happen to see a silver daVinci, that's us and with the extra running gear we're generally making a bit of noise. We left the start at about 7:30 and finished just before noon so I don't know if we would have seen your group.

We've hit 50 on the CV Wildflower 100K with 3 singles drafting and I'd like to hit 55 just once as part of my bucket list.

Given your stats we did not see you today. Darn it. Several BF friends were riding this and we missed all y'all. I'm sure we'll ride together sooner than later.

...yesterday's century was our first Foxy's and well worth the long drive. Its a great Tandem friendly course as there were plenty of us everywhere...also a perfect first century for anyone. Good food, well stocked rest stops, great people....it dosen't get anybetter.
We'll be back.

Do you realize that "Share the Road" signs are put in places where the lane is too narrow for a motor vehicle to safely pass a cyclist while remaining within the lane? In many places these poorly understood and poorly worded signs are being superseded by "Bikes May Use Full Lane" signs.

Substandard width lanes (those that are not wide enough for a cyclist and a motor vehicle to safely travel side-by-side) are one of the explicit exceptions to FRAP in most states, including CA. The middle of the lane is the proper, safe and legal place to ride on such roads. So, yes, "Share the Road" signs are indeed an invitation to take one's place in the middle of the lane.

Of course, when there are several hundred cyclists making their way down the same road the odds of an unsafely close pass by a motorist seem low enough that one would hope that most cyclists would stay far enough to the right to allow overtaking cyclists to pass them without going over the center line. You were probably overtaking other riders so quickly that when they looked back the road was clear and then you were suddenly passing them.

Actually rode with Grandpa Foxy back in the mid-70s in the Belle Isle (Detroit) 200 mile marathon.
Nice he is still being remembered!
