Hopefully we'll have some good weather for this ride. Seems this ride has been a hit and miss as it has rained on us a few times.

I might do this as my first metric century.

Anyone know if the tasting stops are necessary or if this ride meant to be leisurely?

Rode this 2 years ago and signed up again for the 100k this year. There are more wine/rest stops than needed. If I stopped to taste at half of them, I'd be wobbling the last 20k!

I think I tasted at Con Brio and maybe one other stop. There's not much climbing and if the weather holds its a nice first metric.

You can taste if you wish, but some were charging if I recall correctly. Isn't the "complimentary" tasting at the end? The various wineries are used as the rest stops and as wine stops for people who are interested in that portion.

There's not much climbing
There is that one overpass...

Last year it poured the whole day. Yikes.
But we may try again. The 30 miler is fun to ride and taste. They'll then deliver your purchase to the ride end.

I'm waiting until Nov 6 falls within the 15 day accuweather window just to increase the chance of avoiding a downpour. We did this ride 2 years ago and it was very enjoyable on the tandem.

Actually I love rain! I'll be on my old Bike Friday if it's dry, on a Fuji hybrid if it's pouring (rain, that is).

I rode it the past 2 years. Last year was rainy but it made for a really fun ride, especially since I went with family/Friends. It's a fun ride!

Just to provide the proper disincentive, I'm signed up for the 100k. I think MarkoPolo and bigbossman are, too, which would make it a trifecta of ongoing sarcasm and general abuse.

As for climbing, don't forget that litlle dip-and-climb on the outskirts of Clements. It's brutal - brutal, I tell ya!

Yep, I'm always up for 100K of sarcasm and abuse... The RidewithGPS data that LanceOldstrong and Midland posted for last year's 100k boasts 336 feet of climbing. I'll be doing lots of driveway repeats to train for it...

Good luck, it is a real milestone to ride that far. Make sure you eat and drink. Start a little slower than you might normally ride, save some energy for the end. On my first Metric (70 miler) I bonked badly at the end from not eating enough.

Well I checked the extended forecast yesterday planning on registering for the event and again another year and it shows of precipitation for Sunday for this event. I don't understand why they don't move this event up a couple of weeks in October. After all the years of rain you figured they might consider that. Well I'll see what happens next Sunday.

MyLilPony rolled the dice and signed us up. One one side, it was save $20 for early reg, but risk rain on the other side side, risk having it sell out out and/or end up paying more late reg fees .
If it's rains like last year, I'll blow it off and go wine tasting.

The weather forecast is vacillating a bit, but currently 69 degrees and (some) rain. This would definitely be acceptable, but who knows what the weather gods actually have in store. At least I'll have enough sense to bring my mudflap to this ride.

Like I said seems that this event always had rain. The last few years we did get one good year in which was 2009 which we had great weather, other than that it mostly had been a rain out. You would think that Delta Velo would schedule earlier after all these years of being rained out.

Good questions! Those are fair questions to ask. The original date was due to compensate for the fall grape harvest. We cannot have 800 cyclists on the road when the roads are clogged with farm equipment. And then the MDW/Phillips Farms Pumpkin Patch in October (this was the original start location). The Phillips Farms Pumpkin Patch is a HUGE thing here locally, again the roads would be clogged.

Thinking logistically, DV can move up the Giro a little bit, but not much (we have to wait for the harvest, crush, and barrelling to be done at our local rest stops).

I'll be out there bright and early directing you to your proper parking stalls. I'm doing my world famous "No Rain Dance" before hand, so please don't worry about that. In the unlikely event of some bad weather, Rule # 9 applies.

Enjoy your wine & don't forget to say hello.

Did they up it to 800? I thought the limit was at 600? I rode this event a couple of years ago and we had great weather. Well sadly the weather again isn't favorable. It looks like some of you will be riding another wet ride.

As far as Rule #9:
Rule #9 / If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.

Fair-weather riding is a luxury reserved for Sunday afternoons and wide boulevards. Those who ride in foul weather – be it cold, wet, or inordinately hot – are members of a special club of riders who, on the morning of a big ride, pull back the curtain to check the weather and, upon seeing rain falling from the skies, allow a wry smile to spread across their face. This is a rider who loves the work.

Maybe some of us may not be a badass like others, but also some of us are not suicidal especially with a set of slicks on our road bikes out there in the first rain of there season where the farmers left their tracks with a lot of dirt which will be mud out there on the country roads.

I guess some tongue in cheek isn't meant for everybody.

The roads are remarkably great. The last time I rode on them (today), I didn't notice any dirt or mud due to the farmers. But hey, my eyesite is probably not as good as yours.

As of Wed, 0404 Hrs. NOAA-SAC NWS briefing:
Sunday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 59.

I'm sure things have changed since then.

I did this last year, in the rain. I didn't love the wind that came with all that wetness, but the roads were just fine, and I didn't feel in danger at all.
I didn't see any death-inducing mud either. I don't think of myself as suicidal, and I'm all signed up for this year.

Do the initials HTFU have any special application here?
