Lost bike found

Hey guys, I don't know if I am posting in the right area, as I can't seem to find the "lost and found" subforums...

Anyways, during the month of July or August, I found a Bianchi bike with a full campy set at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Palo Alto. If you think this is yours, send me a PM.

You do get an A for effort, though.

You found a bike and the police allow you to keep it at home, or are they holding it for you?
Is it the same system as here in Japan? Here the police hold it for three months, and as all bikes should be registered with the police (here) they are able to find the owner, if not you get to keep it after the three months have passed.

How does someone "find" a bike outside a building?

You've been holding it since summer and posting about it now??

I trust you already posted and scanned the local CL, yes? And checked with the local cops?

If no one claims it I suppose it's yours.

A cyclist I know was out for a walk in his village when he stopped on a bridge to look at the local river. He looked down and spotted a bike in the water, close to one river bank. He managed to get down to the waterside and drag the bike out. It turned out to be a Specialized Roubaix in mint condition, apart from a punctured tyre and a buckled wheel.

He surmised that the bike had been stolen and the thief had ridden into a pothole or hit something which caused the puncture and damaged the wheel and had decided to dump the bike rather than risk walking with it.

So, my pal took the bike to his local police station and reported the circumstances in which he had found it. The officer gave him a reference number and said that if the owner hadn't claimed it in 30 days, he could come back and collect it.

30 days passed and he went back to the police station. The bike was unclaimed and was handed over to him!

So, he got a bike worth over £2,000 ($3,000) for the price of a new wheel!

It happens to be my size so he is going to swap bikes with me on a future ride together so I can see what I think of it. (It looks fantastic and he says it is a dream to ride.)

+1. I wonder how the OP ended up with the bike.

Hopefully, a cyclist didn't hit a pothole and crash into the river. That would be sad taking a dead persons bike...

So crashing into a river and dying wasn't the sad part of that event?

and how awkward would that be if the police find a cyclists body in the river.... they would come after the man who "found" the bike...

To answer how I found it, I literally found it on the ground. It was left on the hospital grounds unlocked for days. I would pass by it every workday when I went to go lock up my bike and just stare at it lying on the ground before I go into my lab for work. I decided one day to just go pick it and try to find its owner after a little while. Ghost riding it four miles sucked.

Also, yes. I have posted quite a few ads on craigslist and have only gotten scam artists and people trying to just obtain the bike from me. As for not posting until now, I did not know this site existed until a friend mentioned I should join.

I used to play golf at the course there at the VA Hospital...affectionally know as "Vets". A little 9 hole pitch and putt course...I think the longest hole was 180 yards or something like that. I think it was $2 to play a round there. Occassionally a patient would yell out of their window at us. Good times.

Er, yes - it would be pretty mean to steal a dead person's bike. In this case however, there was only a poorly bike, not a dead person!

It wasn't a path alongside a river. It was a road over a substantial bridge. There was no way that the bike ended up in the river by accident, and no owner in their right mind would throw their own bike in the river so I'd agree with him that it was 99.xxx % likely that it had been stolen.

He did the right thing and handed it in and he was rewarded with a free bike when the owner didn't report it as stolen.
