People have seen me whip out some fast, strong finishes to my doubles.
Less pain, less inflammation and reduced fatigue is a big plus.

I know that route well -- we do it when we're riding base miles in the "off-season." (cue irony).

Today I drove over Mt. George from Wooden Valley Rd. The new pavement is great! You'll love it next year.

I woke up this morning at ~5am and remembered that it was the day of the Knoxville Double. A week ago, I was already on the road doing the staff ride. I was glad I was still in bed and fell back asleep.

As I was checking the forums before going off to bed this eve it occurred to me that many of the riders are probably finishing about now. While riding a double I know I lose track of time, and it never feels like 15, 16, 17 hours. Off the bike, thinking about all the things I did today though, soccer with the kids, errands, going out to dinner, 15 hours seems like eternity.

After finishing Gran Fondo, I drove over to the finish. Didn't see Curtis there (was there from about 8:30 to 10 pm) ... or maybe he finished before that.

I drove up to Pena Adobe (Knoxville start/finish) last night and was there to welcome Curtis when he finished at 10:43 pm.
He looked proud, satisfied and well.

He should feel that way with these achievements.

Wow am I toast. What a long hot day riding all but a few miles solo.
Too beat to do a ride report now, but highlights include: Surviving, Moonlight on the water, Seeing my sweet wife with a beer at the end, and a surprise visit by Lance Oldstrong.
I did get a HUGE Strava suffer score.

And then he comes goes on line and gives me Strava kudos for some meaningless segment I've done 1,032 times.
I think Furnace Creek is next for Cowboy Curtis.

1. Any and every Diablo ride is kudos-worthy.
2. At the bottom of my Knoxville Strava page it reads "There are no achievements on this ride." Oh well....

If only you'd made that minor detour to crank up the epic 0.045mile "col de p1ss-ant" you could have earned a medal. Oh well.

Good job of sticking with it through adversity Curtis! When I saw you on the Knoxville Grade, then again at lunch, I was having doubts . . . you didn't look so good!

However, you rode through that, and recovered and finished well! Stefan and I finished about 9:30PM, David finished at about the same time you did.

Lovely day on the mountains but a bit on the toasty side. The high on my Garmin was 104 and I think that was on the "Lemond" climb.

Congrats, Curtis!
100+ heat, 15,000' of climbing and 200+ miles, that's a serious ride by itself. Riding it solo makes it epic.

Yeah, I saw that but I don't get it. There are like 80 listed segments on the ride, why don't you get any trophys? The Loch Lomond climb eg says you got your best time on Saturday - you should have a #1PR for that segment. Strava still seems pretty buggy to me.

Hey Curtis. I spoke with you briefly at the 5th rest stop. Glad to hear you finished ok. This ride was very tough, with the heat and the steepest climbing after 100 miles. After such a long day and part of the night, I rolled into the parking lot and saw that my car window was shattered and my wallet stolen. Nice way to end the ride.

That really sucks. Right there at the finish? That's pretty bold, considering there were people around all day.
It seems like everyone I know has been a victim of theft lately, including me. I know what a pain in the butt that will be for you.

Here's some video of the ride. Disappointed the cilp I got of Chuck got messed up. Really have to work on the hills for next year. The good thing about the course change is that everyone that finished gets a PR.

What a nice video. I hurt all over again just watching it. Must have been hard to edit down to this nice short effort. You kept it moving along well. But where am I, darn it?

The editing wasn't too bad. I only shot about 22 minutes of raw footage. I think I got two tired riding to pull the camera out. No idea where I passed you, must have been at a rest stop. Liked your custom DMD jersey. I think another rider calculated the total elevation at over 18k.

Without smoothing, SportTracks said the previous weekends staff ride was 13k; with a rational amount of smoothing it is 12k. Doing the ride over the normal route, the climb over to Napa is ~1200ft. Via Cardiac/Lake Hennessey it's ~1800ft, so it was probably realistically closer to 13k with the re-route.

The video looked just like the previous weekends ride. I dunno how you were still wearing those wrist warmers on Knoxville Rd though! I stopped at the exact same spot on Loch Lomand where you got the ice water ... it was the base of where the road really started tipping up, and I think must have been the first spot that had both shade and a driveway that was level enough to get back started from.

Excellent video chidonchea!

Yes, it was like living it all over again (dramatically shortened, of course!). I saw video of myself at the first and fourth checkpoints, plus I rode with Chuck Bramwell for awhile, so I no doubt saw you out on the course!

It was a hot day, so staying hydrated was absolutely essential! The Quacks did a great job of keeping ice and water available all day!

Yes, great video chiconchea! I saw you on the ride quite a few times, including climbing Howell Mt., on Knoxville (we were together at the mud puddle), and at the next to the last rest stop. I see myself at 3:14 in the video (red/white jersey) at the Knoxville water stop.
