Central Valley??
So just where does the Central Valley fall in this NORTH vs SOUTH debate/discussion?

We have some Sac people in NorCal, but I am going to guess that the Fresno/Bakersfield people are in SoCal. I think that's where the SLO people go.

There is some sort of a magic line drawn through Monterey county I think... like how King City has a Vons and Salinas has a Safeway, and how SLO is halfway but we always had LA cable channels.

Well, whose TV channels do you get, and do you have a Vons or a Safeway?
I see you have a Save Mart, and are almost straight across from Hunter-Liggett... but there is a Bakersfield thread in SoCal right now... the mind boggles. We should ask the mods for a third California forum.

To be fair, he whole Central Valley doesn't fall into "the middle of nowhere" in this discusson. But where you are does.
In the Central Valley, Fresno and parts north should fall into Northern California. Bakersfield and parts south should fall into Southern California. Everything in between is "the middle of nowhere." Yes, you will find arguments about whether Fresno or Baksersfield should also be included in "the middle of nowhere," but I don't think there is much dispute that everything in between is.
I haven't known anyone from Porterville, but the people I have known from Visalia, Tulare, Hanford, Wasco, and Delano have all seemed somewhat proud that they can't be lumped in with either Northern California or Southern California.
Want to make things really confusing? Try figuring out where places in the Sierra, especially the Eastern Sierra, fall into the Northern California/Southern California classification. Where is Mammoth Lakes? It is just north of San Bruno, i.e., it is north of the San Francisco Airport. Nobody disputes that SFO is in Northern California. Nobody disputes that San Jose, well to the south of SFO, is Northern California. Shouldn't a California town slightly to the north of SFO, well north of San Jose, be without any doubt, in Northern California?
Somehow, "the middle of nowhere" sounds a little judgmental. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say you are in "The Twilight Zone."

There should be an "Eastern California" forum.

There'd be no one in it. -)
The NorCal racing association has races south of Fresno (Pine Flat and the late amented Orosi road races). And the Mt Whitney stage race is hardly north of Porterville.
OTOH, the SoCal racing association held their district championship in Bakersfield. (of course NorCal riders can race SoCal races and vice versa)

I think the whole north/south thing is wrong. It should be
Near water or in mountains vs not.

This debate has been going on for most of my life. The border moves from South SF to Bakersfield, depending on who's opinion (or bias) you accept...at the moment.

when i say i grew up in the country, people just don't understand me lol
I don't think its there anymore.
In 1965, I was a 5 year old kid living in Fresno. My dad's work kept him very busy, and he decided he needed to do a little more bonding with his kids. So what did he do? Each of the two oldest kids got a one-on-one overnight trip with dad to. . . yes, Sanger. So in 1965, on the trip with my dad, I lost my first tooth eating a hamburger in a bowling alley in Sanger. Does Sanger still have a bowling alley?
