Tip Of The Cap to a Beloved Local Rider

I don't' think the NorCal board acknowledged the passing of one of our own, or perhaps I just missed it.

So, fav picture:

From what I read he had quite a bike collection.
Very sad story though, he seemed like a top notch guy too.

O Captain! My Captain!
from one of my all time favorite movies 'Dead Poets Society'

Yeah, I still find it a bit hard to believe he's dead. When he lived in SF a while back, I met him one day walking down one of the Avenues towards Geary Blvd. Just a plain ordinary guy wearing everyday, street clothes and driving a Toyota Land Cruiser. He'd talk to you like you've been long time friends, and give you as much time as you wanted. I guess most people knew him doing one of his comedy routines or watching one of his movies. In person one on one, he was as nice a person you could've ever wanted to meet. He was genuine, a down to earth good guy and generous.

As it turns out, he lived right off of Paradise Dr. where you see to the left a yacht harbor and San Quentin in the distance. So we've passed his house many times.

One wish I had was to maybe ride with him one day.

Truthfully didn't know he was into cycling until after his passing.

RIP. Seemed like an all around good guy with nothing but good words said about him after his passing.

I have encountered him twice in bicycle shops in San Francisco, the second time he was buying a seat that is split in the center and went into his "comedy/humor mode" explaining to me that his doctor ordered him to buy one of these seats--he was very funny of course and was touched for addressing me. Saw him a third time after one of the "San Francisco Grand Prix" race walking back by himself.

He use to ride with Lance Armstrong, I heard of one incident up in the foothills where a pick up truck driver was incensed that they were slowing him down and branded a g u n--so the group of cyclists with of course Robin Williams and Lance Armstrong went to the local police station with the license plate number and apparently the driver was subsequently arrested.

I wish he had taken one more ride on that very sad morning--as we all know it helps us a great deal to clean the cobwebs between out ears.
