Not to mention the anchors going into nonstop diarrhea of the mouth with dribble.

Next will come what we must all do to be prepared.

And the channel that was scheduled to cover the CO bike race stayed on the earthquake, repeating the same stuff over and over. Yeah, I suppose there's one person left who doesn't expect aftershocks.

Jens' Last Race Ever was pre-empted for that?!? Nooo!

Well, thanks for warning me, I'll be less inclined to throw something at the teevee when I get around to watching the DVR recording.

asked a cousin directly (reply was 'we're fine')]

I flew out of SFO, landed in Dublin, turned on my phone and had a bunch of freaked out "CALL HOME! EARTHQUAKE!" messages. This is at least the 2nd, possibly 3rd, time I've managed the trick of being airborne during a sizeable quake. We weren't far from the epicentre, and our building is currently yellow tagged, under review by engineers.

I got home on Wednesday and finally had a chance to walk around downtown. I now know why most California homes are built out of wood and not the bricks and mortar I grew up with. Almost any masonry building in downtown Napa is still red-tagged, with bricks and blocks lying in the street out front behind fence barriers.

Thankfully, nobody hurt, and life is (almost) back to normal. The main impact has been a few friends who've had trouble getting their businesses (restaurants, shops, salons etc) back up and running.
