Performance Bike, Walnut Creek Closing -?

I have not gone into the store but it appears to be closing or moving. I noticed driving by the windows are plastered with clearance posters and it looks like the what inside is being liquidated. I'm in n-1 mode myself, but I thought I'd pass the observation along.

I received a notice in the mail saying the store is closing. Not sure if they are moving or just getting off the market.

That is too bad, parking is/was always a problem plus there is more competition close by.

Road in, scored new pair of MTB shoes for $50. It's pretty picked over but there are deals to be had if you need to stock up on tubes, gloves, etc. I guess the last day is 3/15 and they are adjusting the mark downs an additional 40% at the end. The bikes are not marked down.

One of the biggest parking garages in town was right across the street. I remember when this building was a Men's Wearhouse. When Performance opened it was really nice, high end stuff, lots of choice. They even filmed one of those Visa "they don't take American express" commercials in there.

Then it gradually went downhill and then it was taken over by people who didn't know anything about bikes. Maybe the mechanics were good but the sales people were clueless.

Maybe the friendly old timer? He was fine but I cringed every time he'd say "biker" or "biking". I wouldn't want to have to ask them anything other than "where can I find ____?".

The various Performance stores I have been in are always dead, and don't give off the vibe of being a real bike shop. It seems to cater to the weekend warrior MUP types or noobs getting their first bike (like me about 15 years ago). I'll bet the parking was one of the biggest problems over there. Seems ridiculous to me that the city can charge parking on private property(?) (even issue tickets, which I've seen in that lot).

Believe it or not I bought my first Steelman there - filet brazed steel beauty back in the early 90's. It had been hanging in the back for about a year before I made a relatively lowball offer on it and they took it. It was crashed hard in 1997 at 50mph coming down Mines Road and Steelman couldn't repair it so it therefore is no longer in service.......
