Old Colnago Repaint
ive got at 82 Colnago Superissimo. I'm looking for a good painter and chrome plater in the PDX area. Any recommendations?
Thanks |
Just PDX? I doubt anyone can match the original multicolored Colnago paint try Cyclart

Did 1982 predate the Art Deco period?
Nonetheless, the photos at that cycleart place look good. An automotive restoration place might also be worth considering. Post some photos of your Colnago. How long have you owned it? There certainly is some debate on pristine restoration vs "patina". |
I am new to vintage Colnagos, but I think 82 preceded the Art Deco bike period. I get the patina vs restoration, but in this case it's too late - the previous owner did a rattle can paint job. He painted over the chrome fork. The "decals" were printed on an ink jet printer then taped on with clear packaging tape. It was a franken bike component wise, a mix of Campi and Shimano parts, a new 105 triple and a mountain bike rear mech. So, I've sourced all period correct Dura Ace components and bought a new decal set. I found a hot rod chromed in Portland, but he wanted to keep the bike for 3 1/2 months! I'm not gonna let anyone have my bike for 3 1/2 months.
Right now I'm working with CyclArt in SoCal. They will do the chrome, painting and apply the decals, so once we agree on a price I think it's off to California for the frame. |
You're sure you have a Colnago, right?
Post some photos of the lugs and bottom bracket. Also do you have the brand/model of the dropouts (front and rear).? Paint over the chrome might be able to be chemically stripped, then polished. With some luck, chrome restoration with no painting. Lots of reports of polishing chrome with aluminum foil too. My bike is a little older than yours, and some items are a bit past the expiration date :P Good luck with the project. |
Yup, it's a Colnago. It has all the correct markings and logos on the fork crown, head tube lugs, bottom bracket housing and chain stays. The rear drop outs are Campi. I haven't checked the front.
The chrome needs redone. It's pitted and not the quality I want. It needs more than just polishing. I'm headed out of town for the weekend, but I'll post some pics when I get back. |
The front drop outs are Campi as well. I honk I'm going to send the frame to Cycl Art. I like their work and they can do the whole job. I'll post pics when I get it back.

Good luck with the project.

I had CyclArt paint the frame and rechrome the head tube lugs and rear drop outs. It looks amazing.

You're not kidding! Beautiful.
