As far as I know, this is the official / comprehensive status of the trail:

Be sure to come back and post pictures / status updates.

I need to ride this trail, but the reports of deep gravel tend to keep me away. Wondering if it easy on 33mm cyclocross tires with small knobs? Even the old mountain bike only has 1.7" (42mm-ish).

And many thanks to @enigmaT120 for keeping this thread alive with updates.

I see some of my picture are gone... Flikr made me reduce my total photo count to under 1000 and for some reason I had multiple copies of several of these pictures on that site. I must have deleted some I had made links to. I'll try to fix them.

I no longer work up there and don't know when I might make it back up there to ride, maybe for that event that somebody else posted about. It sounds fun.

There are also some good paved rail trails a little farther north around Tenino. I think they are completely paved.

Your 33's should do fine on any stretch of the trail that has been improved. Chehalis to Pe Ell should be no problem on anything 32mm or wider, except maybe in the fall, when the leaves are covering the trail. Also, the bridges that are wood planked can become quite slick when wet or frosty. Keep in mind the Willapa has almost zero grade until you are west of Pe Ell, and is relatively straight in most places.

Not much farther past Pe Ell the trail becomes pretty hard, I started bringing my mountain bike for those sections. Almost all the way to Raymond.

I'm trying to talk a friend I made on Instagram to do the Ride the Willipa event with me this coming summer. It doesn't go all the way to Raymond, probably about some unsafe bridges that I rode or walked terrified anyway. I'm happy I rode the whole thing.
