Mt. Hood

Had a road trip planned back in end of May to Portland from SF Bay Area. Took my bike with me so I can ride up Mt.Hood one day. It was a great ride with beautiful scenery. It really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Just a long grind but mellow grades. I can't believe how little number of people has done this ride on strava though.

Because there are far better alternatives than Hwy 26. Barlow Road and some of the gravel alternatives would be far more pleasant, even on a skinny tired road bike.

In what sense? The road was perfect. Maybe my bar is very low as I'm used to potholes and deep cracks of our mountain roads

It was visually pretty stunning too. Sure cars next to you aren't fun but the shoulder is huge and i never felt unsafe.

I have ridden this exact route, once, and never will again.

If you leave on a quiet morning from Welches, the traffic isn't that dangerous, but it's still fast on 26. Plus there's usually plenty of gravel and debris on the side of the road. That I can pretty much deal with.

What sucks even more is the main road up to Timberline from Government Camp. I don't plan on ever riding that again, as just west of there is West Leg Road. It's more beat up, but has extremely low traffic - you're likely to have to entire road to yourself and maybe even see zero cars. Any potholes or debris is easy to avoid, and it's just as scenic, maybe more so. Look that road up on Strava, I think you'll find a lot of riders on it.

Descending back down 26 sucks, more debris, high traffic. It's all yours.

I'd much rather ride Lolo pass, either direction up to Lost Lake, Whatum Lake, or Dee to Cooper Spur, or even the crest of 44.

That's a lovely picture! I don't know any of the roads involved, but it looks like a lot of climbing. Good scenery helps with that.

What bike is that?

I thought it might be an R5, that's why I asked. The red top tube is hot. What a fantastic bike, I bet it was nice to have on a ride like that. (I had an R3 for years, have a C3 now, have drooled a lot over your bike.)
